Howdy. My 08 LX is randomly not starting, looking for some help. When attempting to start, the ignition button lights up green and the engine turns over, but then immediately dies/turns off.

In searching these symptoms it sounds like perhaps it’s the immobilizer getting out of sync with the key. I have tried both keys but same thing.

Any thoughts on resetting/re-pairing the keys, or other thoughts on what the issue could be?

Thanks!
Tighe

If it actually turned over, that would eliminate a number of things including immobilizer. And starter. And battery and most of the electrical system.

Sensors or fuel is what I'd suspect next. Do you have a code reader to pull codes?

Funny my buddy this morning was experiencing the same with his Raptor. Any chance you got gas recently? At a shell?

Could be the mass airflow sensor, plug and unplug, clean if you have the special cleaner.
Probably out of gas though.

Hmm, is it possible this is out of gas?

Thanks to all for the replies. Naturally my code reader’s in my other car, which is in the shop.

I’ll check the MAF sensor. I do have electronic cleaner, not sure if it’s recommended for MAF’s though. I’m surprised a dirty MAF sensor would cause it to not even start though!

Do you have starter fluid? See if it’ll run on that. If so you’re out of gas.

That’s beyond my means at the moment. I’ll run up to the gas station and buy a few gallons and see if that does the trick. Also still need to check MAF.

@grinchy you were right. Out of gas. I put two gallons from a container in and she fired right up.

My low fuel warning light wasn’t even on…what gives?

At any rate, thanks to all for the assistance! Now I don’t have to take the minivan surfing tomorrow morning after all!

Bizarre, after the two gallons I put in with a container got it to start, I went right to the gas station and filled up…22 gallons?

Are fuel gauges notoriously off!? Mine wasn’t even registering Low Fuel.

Anyway, will look into it more tomorrow. Thanks again to all.

Also, gas prices, 🤦‍♂️

Most likely faulty fuel sender, not the gauge itself. Happens with vehicle 'maturity'

Copy that, will add it to the list. Thankfully the list is pretty small right now! Thank you!

In Germany you would get miles long lines at this gas station… but ok for US it’s expensive. I remember I was able to fuel up last year in April/May near Louisville for nearly under one Dollar…

This thread seems applicable.

You will find pics and further discussion of the inspection hole sender and pump replacement on the factory sub tank thread (linked in my signature).

4th gen 4runners have common fuel level sender issues. We don't see much of this on cruisers but you could be the outlier.

Also for the record there is no fuel filter on US market 200s.
