Like totally dead. The keys won't lock or unlock the doors. The ignition won't turn over - not even a rattle from the starter when I turn the key. There is no electrical running anything (seats won't move, doors won't lock). Everything was fine yesterday. This afternoon my kids were goofing around in it with the key in the ignition for about three minutes before I realized it and pulled 'em out. Two hours later the car is dead! Could they have somehow screwed up the key/immobilizer deal? Can I re-mobilize it? I don't think it's the battery cuz I can't imagine it draining that quickly and completely (it's an '06). Any ideas?

Thanks,
JJ

JJ,

Could be something with the ignition kill switch. Might be a stretch but my Dad had one of the very first '87 turbo Supras. Sometimes when my Mom would drive it she would unlock it w/ the key, get in to start it and nothing. Turns out she was not turning the key hard enough in the door lock. It would unlock, disable the alarm, but not allow the ignition to work.

It took getting out, locking the car, and starting the process all over to get it to work. It only happened once or twice a year, and only when my mom drove it. Once on a solo trip from VB to Hilton Head Island at a rest stop full of bikers headed for Daytona, back when bikers were a little rougher. Very hard to diagnose, especially w/ a slightly panicked woman.

It sounds like a dead battery, but not after 3 minutes. It could be alarm related.

Is tranny in Park?

Check the battery in the key, or try w/ your other key.

If you kids are like mine they could have done damage in one minute. :whoops:

Hope this helps,

-Mark

Rule out the battery first. I have trouble seeing anything but a dead battery that would give you a completely dead LC. Even your dome lights are out, right? No chirp from the remote either?

I agree, charge it up. Would a main fuse blown cause these symptoms? I don't know how that could be done from inside the car though.

Maybe they turned all the interior lights on, little kids are shysters! Check where the switches are set on all 3 overhead lights.

My fathers 100 series diesel did the same thing about four times. It flattens the batteries completely for no apparent reason. Once it was left with a door open, but the courtesy lights are supposed to turn themselves off anyway.

Each time it charged up and kept working for another few months.

He swapped the original batteries out and apparently it hasn't reccured.

If it's an 06, call the dealer and let them handle the problem, no?

Good luck.

Yeah, there's no juice at all. I can't figure out how the battery would have gotten drained though. No way it should have gotten drained in the time the kids were in it. I can't find my jumper cables anywhere. I think they're in my sisters car...

I'll be on the phone to the dealer first thing in the morning - Didn't I buy a Land Cruiser so I didn't have to deal with this stuff?

My recollection is that although the lights will turn off automatically, you can set them to be permanantly on if turn them off and on again after the car is already stopped.

I'll guess that your kid turned the lights off from auto, and then back on again after you'd shut down, and your headlights ate your battery.

When it happened to my fathers truck there was nothing we could find on that should have drained the batteries either.
Your last comment was also echoed when it happened and kept happening.

My Lexus Lx470 did something like this, went to Blockbuster came back, the LX470 was dead, called AAA and found out the connecters to the battery where corroded, I just got a new battry under the Lexus warranty.

Generator short?

My 100 developed a generator short that killed the vehicle like that.

Even a new battery only lasted 5 kms, then the vehicle went dead again. New generator, and both old batteries are still working fine. Happend at around 240KKms.

And it seems as the charge happens around 13.8V, not 14.4. This allows for all types of batteries, but also lower AMPs thus longer charge times. Meaning, a 90Ah battery may not actually contain 90Ah at all, especially when driven only short trips....

I now keep three batteries in my cruiser, to allow for supply overnight of fridge etc...

Regards....

Sorry there is no way to idiot proof any vehicle. If the battery is flat then somebody left something turned on. (99% of the time batteries do not die without a load being left on them)
Is the battery flat, do the headlights turn on? If they don't then something has been left on or there is a bad connection on a battery terminal or something else, if you purchased a landcruiser to get away from everyday electrical problems caused by the user then you may need to rethink your purchase. You are partly correct, but in more than one occasion the vehicle I know did not have anything left on. On these vehicles it doesn't take a person to turn something on or off, the ECU's have control over almost all the electrical devices.

I vote for the battery too. If you have a voltmeter, try to check the voltage of the battery.

Yeah as soon as I started reading I believe it's the battery, let us know!

If you don't want to wait for the dealer to open on Monday, pull the battery and take it to one of the chain autopart stores. They'll recharge it and test it for free. The battery is probably OK so you can bring it home with a full charge and re-install. My guess is you'll find the head lights are on. They can drain a battery PDQ. jp

Right. I am an idot and even the Land Cruiser can't save me from myself! Mother lov'n... You all are gonna love this...

Turns out just before the kids were messing around in there, my wife reached in and pulled the key out of the ignition so that they couldn't start it and drive off. Oh, and she remembered (at about two in the morning) that she had to turn the key to get it out. So who drove the car last and left the key in the ignition, turned to the "on" position for about 24 hours? Yeah, that's right, DAD.

Mystery solved. I found my cables in the back of the Heep and we're back in action. For what it's worth, I'm not rethinking my purchase. I was always giving the cruiser the benefit of the doubt. I was just trying to blame the kids instead. But hey, thanks for the 2 cents and all the input. I need an emoticon of a little dude with his tail between his legs...

Take care,
JJ

Speaking from experience - much easier to be an idiot when kids are involved. Yet it is so easy to blame / expect them as the culprit. My guess is that they are still to blame as you likely were dealing w/ them (or dealing with your wife dealing w/ them) when you left the key in the "on" position.

This forum is a great source for both help and heckling. ;)
