I've developed a leak on the rack and ordered a new unit form CDan. After reading lots about replacing bushings nothing about removing & replacing the whole rack. Elsewhere I read that I need to remove the oil filter & filter adaptor, and after crawling under the truck today I can see why.

While it's out I plan on upgrading my bushings as I was able to see the rack move when turning the wheel.

One question I have is the new rack has arrows on the two bushings to indicate the load direction. I'm thinking the new poly's won't have this?

If anyone has some insight to this job or a link to some good points please post up!

I'm interested in this also! Mainly changing out the bushings as my unit moves around. Where did you get your bushings from?

I plan on ordering from OBT USA unless someone has a better place. I intend to replace my leaking rack and do the bushing upgrade while I'm in it. The new bushing are in tight in the rack and should be fun to remove.

I found some instructions for removing the rack from AutoZone of all places.

If anyone that has removed
their rack, please proof read and let me know if you see any errors..
Thanks,
DMX

Dean,

I'm sure you read...raising the engine helps immeasurably. As mine sits on stilts on the driveway sans diff and cvs the rack is well exposed...;)

Make sure the rack you buy is virgin new not reman. And we used a press to install the smaller poly bushings to the new rack...otherwise it will be a fight with a hammer and socket.

Dan, I must have overlooked that, Thanks!
Are they undoing the motor mounts using a floor jack? I wonder if the removal of the oil filter adaptor is necessary jacking up the motor?
To my surprise this seems to be a common problem, but not much info on R&R the rack.

I had a shop rebuild my old rack, but I had brought in SuperPro bushings for them to install and the Aussie mechanic told me that they are THE way to go. Just thought I'd add my $.02.

I used a bottle jack with a piece of 2x4 under oilpan. Only removed bolts on driver side mount, and raised it about an inch. You can use a bolt with some big fender washers to get those bushing in.

Did you still need to remove the oil filter & adaptor?

I don't think you need to, other have done it without removing. I already had mine off, but looked like it was not necessary.

Ok, cool. I have my SuperPro bushings installed, but can't start until next weekend.

Dean, Unless you've already replaced the coolant hose as a PM item you might want to consider replacing the smaller diameter short coolant hose at the oil cooler...while you're there ;)

Thanks for the tip! I'll call CDan now and get one.

Being that it's the most recent thread of the steering rack, so I'll post my question here.

I got my rack out last night. I decided to check the u-joint of the steering shaft to see if it's tight and smooth. I am little bit perplexed and am wondering if anyone of you notice this. The u-joint seems to click when you twist the joint past 90 degree. I do not think the joint will ever make a 90 degree bend when it's on the rack but wanted to confirm if that's normal? The joint feels tight though.

^ didn't notice this when I last had mine out. But given I'm more than a little anal on the parts replacement program and there was enough surface rust on the entire shaft assembly...I opted to renew all 3+ years ago when we did my rack.

The click could be a bad spot from not ever rolling past that position. Not sure what your seeing, but I doubt it's a real concern.
I'll check mine when I get the rack out. (I'm currently in Miami and plan on starting on it this weekend.)
