When opening the driver's side kick plate and looking for the circuit opening relay on my 62 so I can pull it, crank the engine over, have it die, and depressurize the fuel system, I am confronted with something that looks absolutely nothing like the picture in the Haynes manual (FSM is on the way).

There are 3 round metal relays, none of which when pulled kill the engine, as well as two other square relays (one black, one brown), neither which are the right relay. (and the flasher relay for the lights is there too).

In fact, the relays are mounted from above facing down and not on the side facing out under the panel, which is how they are represented in the manual. I'm not sure if they were moved (doubt it) to make room for the ridiculous amount of hardware needed for the alarm, shock sensor, and dual glass breakage sensors that the dealer decided to install (which in spite of all the lights blinking on the power boxes appear not to work.)

Can anyone tell me which is circuit opening relay? I'd post a picture if I hadn't dropped my digital camera and broken it about 10 minutes ago.

Thanks.

I'm too lazy to go look in the FSM, but I would think you could accomplish the same thing by just unplugging the MAF sensor. Without the MAF sending an OK signal to the circuit, the fuel pump won't run.

If all you are trying to accomplish is depressurizing the fuel system, just wrap a shop rag around one end of the fuel filter and slowly loosen one of the banjo fittings. The amount of fuel lost is minimal - less than a cup and the system will be pressureless. this is with the engine off, of course and replacing the copper washers on the banjo fitting would be a good idea!
Ken, did you hang on to the FJ62 FSM?

I take the gas cap off, pull the EFI fuse when the motor is running, then do what Overhanger says.

Well I'm an idiot

I asked about 3 different people, and they gave me the same advice. I think I need to go back to electricity 101.

Thanks.

the circuit opening relays on fj62s are located behind the passenger kick plate. toyota dealerships, haynes manuals and repair shops are all wrong with its location, pull that panel off and there she blows along with some other relays. but for depressurizing, take off gas cap and pull efi fuse with engine running as land pimp says. and i think haynes actually gave that method too. but the relay for all who have searched and ripped everything apart like i did, the c. o. r. is behind the passenger kick plate. ben
