Hi everyone.
I am a new Prado owner and love these trucks. Tonnes of fun. I am having a problem with my electric hubs though. I would prefer to change them out for manuals. What type of hub will work best with the spacer adapter that Rob has made at raddcruisers?
I have not had much luck finding used so I am hoping new will be easier...
Will the manual hubs from one of the mini trucks work?
Does anyone know a good place to buy the Aisin Hubs in Calgary? Or even someone who could ship them here would be great.
What parts will I need to do this job?

Thanks alot
T:confused:

Aisins are pricey to buy new. Any fine spline cruiser/minitruck donor will do. Check your local wreckers or the 4wheeler.ca site

Edit...Contact this guy if your stuck for some. He's in Coalhurst just outside of Lethbridge and has a Toyota specific wrecking yard. Bound to have what you need.

Hey, thanks alot man. I will try to get a hold of that guy in coalhurst and see what he has avaliable. appreciate the advice on the aisins as well - still would be curious as to just how much they would run?? I suppose there is not too much to go wrong with a manual hub though eh...

Ok... now just so I am clear what all will I need to change these freaking electric hub (not working at the moment!) with manual... just this spacer and a used manual hub or new mini truck hub?? just bolt on and go??:meh:

Get 2 manual Aisin hubs (you may need the cone washers/lockwashers too) new or used from a cruiser or minitruck and the spacers. The spacer resides behind the manual hub and makes up for the difference in length between the electric and manual. I'm not sure what becomes of the wiring for the electric hub though. Here's a pic of our 77 that was already converted to manual before we got it. The wiring is still in place at the rotor backing plate and I haven't had the need to pull the hub apart to see what's going on inside.

Hey Thanks alot.
The pictures are great.
I am assuming the spacer you are refering to would be the one that rob at radd cruisers fabricates?? or is there a stock type unit. I know yu mentioned this was done when you got it - just thought you might know... you certainly have better handle on this than I!
Thanks again
Trent

Perfect... Ok One last question (i promise... well no i dont PROMISE, but I hope this gets me close!) My hubs say 'power locking hubs' on te side not 'automatic hubs' so I'm just wondering re the hubs on the Prados ADD (automatic differential disconnect) or just automatic... I am assuming they are just regular electronic auto hubs??
I wonder if this even makes sense...

Your Prado came out with electric hubs that are contoled by a switch on the dash, whereas Surfs had ADD system that disconects the axle from the diff.

Great thanks for the clarifacation. So all I will need for this conversion will be the manual locking hub set up (not the actual hub assembly... or do I need both) and the spacers from Rob at raddcruisers... + the cone and lockwashers... and the mini truck locking hubs will work (with 30 spline)...
This is staring to get clearer!!

As the earlier photo shows, you will need the conversion ring kit, which should incluide ? the bolts or cap screws
and a set of manual hubs ,30 splin, if they are Aisin type then you'll need the collits to suit .
Other types don't use collits, so are pron to working loose or breaking the bolts if used with a front locker.

Ok Great!
It sounds like robs spacer set up comes with the neccessary bolts and what not so I just need to find a set of these aisin hubs... seems to be easier said than done! Any suggestions?... I am a bit nervous as I said before about the wreckers because I'm not confident I would be able to pick a set that arent allready beat down... top 3 suggestions for hub options??

Hey everyone...
Thanks for all your help, pictures etc. I was able to get a set of aisin hubs, adapters and all the bits from Rob at raddcruisers. (Thank you Rob!) And I'll get her all installed and rolling in 4wd next weekend.
Great Forum, I'm hooked.

285.00 for the 'adapter ring' (with necessary bolts) and 260.00 for a set of reconditioned aisin hubs and hardware,
Rob says he is trying to get ahold of as many of these hubs as possible, clean em up and set everything up in conversion 'packages' wih instructions etc.
Would be a great product for new landcruiser owners... beats a failing electric hub anyday!
Looking forward to the change over....

$260 for reconditioned hubs is a deal. Don't quote me on it but I vaguely remember replacement Aisins from Toyota were around $350 ea. Cool that you're set up. On our 77 the 4hi doesn't kick in (and dash light doesn't come on) unless both 4hi and hublock buttons are depressed. Something to do with the hublock wiring harness still being hooked up. Please enlighten me if you figure this out during the course of your swap.

Right on! I will let you know about the light thing...
Rob at Raddcruisers was awesome... highly recomended and seems like a stand up guy if you need help with parts. lots of years of experience too.
Thank you too for your help and the pics.
all the best man.

The ECU controller won't let you go into 4WD with out the Hub lock button being engauged.
So when you fit manual hubs you still need to push the hublock button, as well as the 4WD, because the system does not know that you have fitted manual hubs.
You can remove the wireing from the plug on the chassis , to the brake backing plate, if you wish.

Excellent, Thanks

Thanks 'oldblue' for the heads up with the buttons... I am sure (because i am pretty new to being my own mechanic..) I will just leave the wiring as is and fool the truck into thinking it is still locking the hubs. Perhaps later on I will remove however and now I know what to do!
Hey, thanks again guys. Parts should arrive in the next few days...
