The problem is that the other ones listed are still in Japan. I doubt they will budge on the price or the fees :frown:

Other similar imported ones are listed from $14,000 to $18,000.

Again I'd like to take it to my mechanic, a nice long test drive, and look at it myself on a hoist. Testing out the 4wd too.

Its $8900 safety'ed , emissions tested, and with a 30 day warranty.

in the land of the rising sun alot can happen..... what if you pay extra and get a unit with messed up mileage....??

having had a hiace with a 1kz-te running up to 450,000km without any problems, i'd say that the 1KZ is pretty reliable....

only thing that screwed the engine was a water pump failure which gave me a buckled up head...:bang:

trues up..... try to get a japanese odometer accuracy certificate...... most car dealer here in Fiji fiddle around with the odometer and change the milage...

my personal experience is that a dealer was passing off a corolla wagon as having only 78,000km (1992 model), whereas all the servicing stickers and the sticker on the timing belt cover indicated that the car had done well over 300,000km.....

if 269,000 is the correct reading then atleast you will have peace of mind for paying for what you are really getting....

much better than paying nearly double for something which may have actually done more than the odometer reads....

just food for thought......

Good point. The timing belt cover etc all match up.

are you on yahoo messenger or anything??? i can give u tips as to what to look at... cheerz....

Oh, this thing does not have lockers. Is it a big deal to add them later? I'm not super concerned. i dont plan on doing any super hardcore wheeling, at least not at first.

i have lockers on my 80series but i hardly use them...........

as for my 70 SWB, it does not have lockers either, but it is very capable off-road none the less....

Jason, I am in Toronto and recently purchased a truck very similar to the one you are looking at. Pic's below. A couple of points for your info...

I paid 12500 for my truck. I purchased it from a guy that sourced it direct from Japan for me. He also sourced almost the same truck for a friend of mine for 12k b/c his has a little higher km's. Mine has 140k and I have driven it about 5k in 6 weeks... a couple of camping trips up north and a trip to US for new tires! I have also included a pic of the plate in the engine compartment which shows that mine is a KZ-TE engine. It is manual and runs nice!

7800 seems a good price and the KZ-TE engine has been solid so far... fingers crossed! I am looking for a good diesel mechanic in the area so if you know anybody... please share.

Have had a heck of a time with insurance though...almost double b/c of the RHD! Most companies don't even what to touch them. Also, I have the original export certificate from Japan which validates the km's and I trust the guy that sourced it for me. If you are interested I can put you in touch with him although he told me with mine that he won't do another one of these at this price b/c he really didn't make much. Apparently the good KZJ78's in Japan are expensive and in high demand but we had agreed on a price before hand. Rather than raising the price on me, he absorbed it... like I said, good guy!

BTW, this picture was before my new 31x10.5 R15 Yoki's! Looks nicer now! Looking to do a lift probably in the spring.

PM me if you want any more info....

Good Luck!

Samir

Who are you insured with?

Intact Insurance - a re-branded ING

BTW, you noted you found the service manual earlier. Is that the KZ-TE Engine service manual or something specific for the KZJ78?

Personally, I would not touch any of the small EFI diesels that are coming in from Japan.

I have only seen a few 1KZTE engines and there is a mixed bag of experiences with them so far here in Canukistan.

I am not holding my breath on these things at all. I would not buy one unless I was planning on doing an engine swap... and why bother? There are so many other better trucks out there for not much more money.

Such as?

So far I have not found much feedback on them, but so far none of it was bad.

I cant vouch for the maintenance or how they have been treated in Japan, but these engines are extremely popular in countries where they have been sold new.
In Australia ,the earliest of the 90 series diesels still fetch good prices, and there are many owners going back to buy their 2nd and 3rd Prado.

Thanks guys for all the advice!
I think this LC is too much of a gamble. The dealer is a bit sketchy, and the truck is very high milage. Sourcing parts is going to be a hell of a hassle and finding somebody to service it will be even more of a hassle. Let alone finding insurance!

At the moment I'm going to keep looking, but unfortunately I dont think I'd want to own a non diesel land cruiser, and owning a diesel one just isnt practical. Thanks

Pretty sure it's go the 2LTE which is prone to headgasket failure. But then again, what toyota isn't?

Pretty much every motor they made up until the mid 90's isn't

The problem isn't the heads, or the head gaskets, the problem is the person driving an underpowered truck/car like it is some V8 or inline 6 gasser. By doing this creating some insane EGT numbers 100's apon 100's of times, resulting in a head/gasket failure....

I honestly cannot believe guys with 3b's that don't have pyro's don't blow cracks in the heads after every drive up a slight incline at 90 too 100kmph
and this is far from the case...

The fact is although 22RE's, 3B's are in my mind the most bullet proof of any 4 cylinder motor, after 20 years of making EGT numbers that are hotter then the temperature of a molten aluminum furnace, yea sometimes you need a head milled or a gasket! (This isn't what one calls an issue)

You want issues, look at 2002 jetta 1.8T's and find something that isn't an issue!

Its a wise and practicle decision, unless you want to be an enthusiast or have bags of money,I would do the same.

But what about the KZ-TE?

Oh and I was looking at a 2002 jetta to buy instead of this.

I'm going to keep this cruiser in the back of my mind. I'll also see if I can find a place locally that would repair this thing.

Same engine with some electronics on the fuel pump for some more HP.The pump can not be repaired except by Toyota Im told, about $2500 + fitting in oz
Not much to repair on a diesel once its running right.
They only need regular oil and filter changes for up to 100000klms,which is why many of us own them.

Thought about a BJ71 or 74? I dont think the weight difference would be that much,if any.
