hzj78 Prado questions! answers needed! Thanks!

Hi Guys,
I noticed this guy for sale in some local classifieds and was wondering if anyone could help me ID it, and the engine. I notice you guys here refer to everything by the proper engine code and the truck model. All that is listed in the info is 1994 Land Cruiser Prado, turbo diesel. It was imported from Japan to Canada and its an RHD model.

I'm kind of in love with it. The price is $8900 CDN. Kind of steep in my opinion but what do I know.

Thanks!

p.s. I've googled and searched a few FAQ's but cant quite figure out where this guy fits in! Thanks & Sorry again for the newb-ness.

Jason

It's a Prado (LJ78?), I'm guessing it has the 2.4L engine in it (2LTE I believe), which is a time bomb. Walk away.

I'm a LHD gasser guy, but I'm sure one of the dieselheads will correct or confirm this in a bit.

FWIW, the Prados sell cheap for a JDM "cruiser", and there is a reason. If you like the general body style, here's a proper one that was for sale in Calgary recently: https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/317790-1992-hzj77.html Asking price was >$20K, but is has some upgrades to it.

I read alot of threads where the motors are major problems as well.
Shame, it's not a bad looking rig.

Pretty sure it's go the 2LTE which is prone to headgasket failure. But then again, what toyota isn't?

It could have an R gasser engine ,RJ78 or a 1KZ T ,KZJ78 or it could even have a 3L which would be a
LJ79(non turbo).
Being a 94 model it is on the cusp of engine changes which varies from market to market.

Best place here for model designation
Foreign Toyota 4x4s

I think it's not just the gasket, but actually the head having a tendancy to crack. Maybe ask on the deisel forum.

That was my understanding....

Thanks guys! So I'll stay away from this thing, and sadly it is pretty good looking. The engine is a 3.0L turbo diesel, confirmed by the badges on the back of the truck in another photo. Here is an engine bay shot if anyone can ID that.

Thanks again guys.

Its a 1KZ(T or FTE) Much better engine that the 2lt and still a current Toyota offering. Not exactly bulletproof but pretty good, I think. They just began arriving in Canada so time will tell if the Coq eats them up like it does 2Lts. Wanna be the guinea pig?

You guys sound like you are talking about Land Rovers..

THe 1KZ T is a whole different ball game. They do crack heads occasionaly but nothing like a 2LT.
The engine was in production for nearly 10 years and has been replaced by its more powerful big brother, the 1KD FTV.

It would make a great family wheeler

Wait did we put this back in the running? So this is out of the crappy pile?

Apart from a more reliable head,it has much better power and torque than the 2LTE without using much more fuel ,if any.

I would ask some more questions on the 90 series Prado forum, they have the same diesel with some electronics on the fuel pump (1KZ TE )

So would I be safe to say I've gathered the following from this thread:

This is a model LJ78
It has an 1KZ T or FTE engine
It would make a great family wheeler

Am I wrong here?

 Then I googled LJ78 and found this

Luxury Imports - LJ71 / LJ78 Prado WARNING!!

Doesn't look good! I wanted to buy this for a cross canada road trip, but this is not looking good!

Here's a rough model designation break-down
first letter (or two if there are 3 letters) correspond to the engine series (B, H, F, FZ, HZ, HD, L, KZ I suppose in this case)
last letter is a J for landcruisers
first number (or two if there are 3 numbers) is the series of cruiser (40, 60, 70, 80, 100)
last number is the model within the series (wheel base, pick up or wagon or troop carrier...)

This one would be a KZJ78 if it has a KZ series engine in it.

You might get more direct answers if you post in the 70 series section, or diesel and 24v, not everyone ventures into chat. That said, I would trust Lowenbrau and Rosco to know a great deal about the diesel engines they've had their hands on.

no, not if:
It has an 1KZ T or FTE engine
so:
It would make a great family wheeler

which makes irrelevant the question of whether an LJ78 would make a good rig, as this is not an LJ78

I googled LJ78 and found this

maybe send a PM or e-mail to wayne at luxury imports, IIRC he's in ontario somewhere nowadays, and he's a true import cruiser guru, and generally a good fella who might have some insight into that series of truck
