Anyone done Hell’s Gate in a 2nd gen Tundra or Sequoia without a locker? I’ll be on the trail in a few weeks and need to decide if I’m “dropping in”.

FWIW -

I have not tried it in my tundra. if you haven't been there before - it's a loop so you can just drive around to the bottom or if you go down you could exit the back way without having to go back up. You won't get stuck stranded in the bottom.

Toyota did it in a stock Tundra for its ad a few years ago. I don't think the ATRAC is very good in the tundra. It's pretty lame compared to the atrac/MTS in my 4Runner or other Toyota models I've been with. But I think you could make it up hell's gate. If it's stock you'll likely drag the bumpers in various places and/or the belly a bit.

It’s modded so clearance isn’t a concern - only worried about putting power where it’s needed.

I think you'll be okay. It's more of a test of the driver's nerve than a particularly challenging obstacle. Long wheelbase is easier too IMO. And the 2nd gen tundra has a lot of articulation that helps there. I'd go around 15psi on your tires, watch some videos with a spotter for the right line, and you'll probably cruise up without too much issue. The biggest struggles I've seen there in a dozen or so trips out to hells revenge is the short wheelbases. CJ5s and 2 seat SXSs are a problem. The longer wheel bases do well. Even with stock open/open trucks with no traction control usually make it up.

But be aware - it's really steep in person. If you're not used to slickrock trails it's intimidating the first few times on terrain like that.

I hope my ascent is a little smoother than that. Holy wheel spin.
It wouldn't make for very interesting content if he just drove up the hill. Gotta have some wheel spin and smoke! With better tires aired down a bit - it shouldn't be too bad.

I do wish Toyota or some aftermarket hack was available just to up the sensitivity of ATRAC to match all the other models. Any of the other similar era ATRAC equipped models you wouldn't think twice about it.

So just sitting here knowing AZBoatHauler did this trip. What’s the ATRAC stand for? I’m putting a pair of ARB’s in my Cruiser. Wondering if that would be plausible solution
to Tundra traction issues. Mine is a 2010 RCSB base model.

In the tundra I think it stands for Almost TRAction Control.

Someone needs to figure out a way to retrofit the LC200 ATRAC or MTS module into the Tundra. That would solve it for all of my needs. I'm not sure what else you can do other than locking diff upgrades. I have one other idea that would be to use a signal modifier for the ABS sensors where you would interrupt them inline and let's say double or triple the pulse frequency output to trick the ECU into thinking the speed differential is greater than it is when you're slipping and potentially result in tricking the ATRAC into being more aggressive.

In a perfect world - we could just reflash the ATRAC code to put LC200 code in the Tundra ATRAC ecu. Or in an even more perfect world - Toyota would have just put the LC200 version in the tundra from the factory.

I've read on the Tundra Forum that people were finding that ATRAC seems to only function well between about 1800 and 2200 rpms. Below that they say it basically shuts off and above 2200 or so it dials it back assuming you're in mud or sand wanting wheel spin. I'm not sure if that's right, just something I've read when trying to figure it out myself.

If you hit the sweet spot it seems to work. But it sure takes a lot of time to engage and a lot of wheel spin before it moves.

Simply beautiful.

I had planned to go in October. Wifey got a new job and we don’t feel it’s appropriate to take a week off in October then maternity leave in February.

I still think about going by myself every day. Just take my 40 and my dog and roll.

But that would be pretty selfish of myself.
