Hey All,
Just thought I would introduce myself. Up until 2 weeks ago I was Land Rover Junky. I spent 6 years building and offroading my 00' Disco. (see below) Unfortunately she gave up the ghost in the form of an electrical fire...after some sleepless nights and some thought I decided to put away the green oval for good and jump into the Yoto world. I have a 97 FZJ-80 collectors edition that has been waiting for the chance to go off road. I am taking the insurance money I got from my Disco and building up the 80. To be honest....I CAN"T WAIT! So now all my free time and a lot of work hours will be spent watching this board instead of others:D
I live in the Charlotte NC area and would love to meet folks that can teach me the Cruiser ropes.
First Mod will be tires, and getting rid of the stock nasties. I think I am going to go with BFG ATs 295/75. From what I have read those should work with the stock suspension. I will be adding a lift in the near future but not before I get rid of the Mall Crawler tires. Any direction or thoughts would be greatly appreciated on what to do and not for a new build.
Hope to be out on the trails soon!

gotta love lucas!!!!!!!!

welcome aboard!! i promise its a decision that wont be regretted. Do you know andy aka cruiser4life? hes in clt and and ex rover guy, i think rich is another still w/ a disco that has joined us at URE a time or two. The 2.5 inch lifts are great and you dont get into castor territory, but there are solutions for how ever far you wanna go.......but theres some rule of thumb of $1000/inch over 4 !!! the Old man emu "j" kit is 3.5 and you can fit 35's and flirt w/ driveshaft vibe possibilities and light castor depending on which bushings you chose. If the bushings arent enough there are plates made to correct further castor. There is tones of info in the FAQ section of 80s tech if you havent seen it and pictures of every available lift. Another newcomer is the Frankies off road kit. 3.5'' fits 35's and uses a premium bilstien shock. keeps us posted and your wallet well guarded :)

4/j combo w/ 35's and OME j/medium combo w/ 315's for reference

Lucas = Prince of darkness :flipoff2:

I'm another convert from Land Rovers. Actually, not really a convert as I had a FJ60 before my Disco (dark green SD7 with OME lift & ARB front bumper). But now back to FJs...currently a tan FJ40 I've almost finished restoring. I'm north of you in the LKN area. Looks like you wheeled with ONSLRS? If so, we probably wheeled together at some point at Cullowhee...Patrick (the guy in ONSLRS with the old red 109 is my neighbor). Hope to see you on the trails.

Actually didn't wheel a lot with ONSLRS. I was a member of CROC. I think I may have done one or two events with ONSLRS. But I spent a ton of time at URE so I am sure we have crossed paths at some point. By the way, it is actually reassuring to hear I am not the only one to jump from green, I am still having some separation anxiety. But new tires on the Cruiser are coming soon so that should help

Since we are on a role.....directly from the Land Rover Technical Bulletin on consistent oil leak complaints from consumers:

TSB #100023
".....In vehicles from VIN number SALTY000000001 to SALTY999999999 there is evidence of oil leaks. While the technical division at Land Rover has never been able to pinpoint a single area as the root cause they have developed a permanent fix to this issue. Please precisely follow each step below in specific order:

1. Turn off vehicle and make sure it is secure
2. Vehicle will need to be raised so a technician can access the underside oil pan.
3. Remove drain plug and drain oil into an approved waste container. The technician should verify that all oil is drained and that the area is clean of all residue.
4. Replace the drain plug, again making sure the are is free of contaminants.
5. Lower vehicle and return to owner assuring them they will never see another oil leak and they can rest soundly knowing that there garage will remain spot free.

Factory Suggested time and hours:

Diagnostic time....$130.00
Labor...8hrs
Parts....Make something up here

Huh, a Rover electrical problem, imagine that! ;)

I had a '96 Disco so I too can commiserate.

Anyway, welcome to the wonderful world of Cruisers. You will not look back!

Lucas electronics really bring the suck! I used to be into Jaguars, before I knew better, and have been screwed more than once by Pucas electronics. I saw a sticker that was made for both Rovers and Jaguars and It read "The parts falling off of this car are made with the finest English craftsmanship " I thought that was classic. Welcome aboard!

Welcome! I live in Charlotte myself. Its nice to see some more Queen City folks out there. I've got a black '96 LC with a bunch of stuff including a snorkel. You may have seen me around town. I actually live near Concord Mills, so if you ever need anything, just let me know. :D

I'm excited to see all the Charlotte people around. Anybody ever do a pub night at all?

There are a lot of us in the Charlotte area...would be great if we could get together for a pub night or an early Saturday morning breakfast or lunch BBQ.

Do a search...either here or in the Chat or 40 series section...I've seen a "Charlotte area" thread before... With spring here, we should get more organized and plan some local outings.

Charlotte here and ex-Rover owner to boot! I know some of the folks in CROC, I've ridden with them and they've tagged along on some of our trips.

Welcome! I'd be down for a social gathering, let's get it together.

Another Charlotte Cruiser Here. Welcome to the club. Would also be interested in getting up some time. I am down in the Ballantyne area.

Sounds like we have some interest. I would be more than happy to get something together. Sounds like we have people from south charlotte and the Lake norman area. Probably somewhere in the middle, anybody have any thoughts about a time and place? I will throw in Murphy's off of tyvolla. Any other suggestions?

Welcome to the sickness. :flipoff2:

You won't be sorry that you bought a Land Cruiser. ;) Take lots of pictures and post them up.

So here she is. A '97 Collectors edition with 83,000 miles. New BFG 195/75 R16 next week. Followed by a lift. Don't worry the rock catchers will be coming off when the tires go on :grinpimp:
