I have an 89 FJ62 and had a questions about the 4wd light, becouse all the time is now permanently illuminated whether I am in 4wd or not, My concern is, if i put the lock hub on "LOCK" :
4WD turn off + Lock = 4WD is working
4WD turn on + Lock = 4WD is working

4WD turn off + Free = 2WD is working

Any idea what is causing this?

I apreciate your help

Your 2WD solenoid is kaputt.

No repair possible, only replacement. Easy to do, but expensive using OEM parts.

Cruiserparts.net have used US solenoids and new non-USA. They work the same but the Toyota Service Manual diagram shows the non-USA ones.

There are two screws holding the solenoids to the metal bracket. These screws are accessible from the back if you remove the entire metal bracket . There is a 12 mm bolt holding it to the firewall.

When hooking up the new solenoids, (on a US model) the bottom solenoid is the 2WD one, and should have power all the time. The top one gets power as soon as the 4WD button is depressed (62 of course)

My FSM 36262E page TF-36 shows non-US solenoids, that have the 2WD on the top. Made me crazy for a while, but it all works. (I installed non-US solenoids, but was following US vacuum routing).

Be careful when testing for polarity, as the little sockets are close together, and I accidentally shorted the circuit. (FYI circuit goes through the gauge fuse in 1988 62's, at least in my 07-88 '62)

I confirmed that 4WD was working by crawling under the truck to do the spin test. Its all good. Just remember to tag everything before cutting wires. But you know that already....

You can swap the hoses temporarily to get the light to turn off or bypass the solenoid. Have to look at the diagram but did it playing around on a 62 I was looking at buying since the light was stuck on.
