Hi guys. on my 01 LX my heat shields are rattling and I want to remedy it. issue is I am in a temp situation w/ no tools etc. and just don't have stuff to do any fix myself.

Lexus wants like $1K to replace all the shields which seems silly. Thought I could just bring it to a local shop that can put it on a lift in front of me then rig something up to keep those shields in place.

Any suggestions on where I could take it for this in Tysons?

Thanks.

I need to fix this too. You should see the people's faces when I drop my kid off at school and the heat shield starts sounding like a machine gun. Too funny!

If you are talking about cat shield rattle, all you need is a flathead screwdriver and two hose clamps per catalytic converter. Be sure to measure their diameter before buying.

Local dealership charged me a couple of hundred dollars to replace them on my 99LC several years ago. Could they have gone up that much?

This is solved with two beads of heat resistant caulk and a screw or in extreme cases two band-type clamps that cost ~$3.

Not exactly a dealership problem. Maybe give a tube of caulk, the clamps, a printout of a MUD thread with pictures and a twenty dollar bill to a the next blue-collar guy you see. :D

Seriously - Pepboys,Autozone,Sears, Midas or any gas station with a garage and a mechanic will be able to do this if you give them the MUD thread with the information.

I just put it on High & 20 mintues later - w/ 4 clamps ($8 bucks)and my high pitch squeaking under throttle is gone.

Dealer wanted 1 K & would not do otherwise... go figure.

I do have another exaust sounding vibration at adle only when cold which unfortunately is still there but very minor.

Thanks gents!

I am doing mine this weekend. I hopefully can silence the machine gun sound.

What size clamps did you purchase, 4 inch or 7 inch or both?

Do you have to use the high temp red gasket stuff or are the hose clamps sufficient?

I used just the hose clamps on my old '99 and it was fine.

I used two 3.5 inch ones strung together ------ it was the biggest size they had at Advance auto.

works fine. - my sense is the front cover would take like a 4.5 or 5. and the back would take a 6 or 7. the front was squeaking on mine but I just clamped all four.

Did not use gasket stuff... I bought it but when I got underthere decided no need to have a party squirting that stuff all over the place. ..............clamps are sufficient.

Two 4" SS clamps per shield, no goop, stopped all cat heatshield rattles on mine.

Got the clamps in HVAC section at Home Repo store.

Did one side first, then the other a year or two later after it too started rattling.

Watch out for cheap chinese-made clamps - they strip easily. Buy a couple extra to save time, in case the first clamp or two strips. :)

I added the clips. My cat covers were not loose at all. Even tapping with a screw driver they sounded very solid. I added in attempts to stop a reveberation I get on cold mornings. I also removed the engine cover today. We shall see what happens. I did notice my PS reservoir leaking.

No reverberation since adding heat shield clips and removing engine cover. I no longer get strange looks when my cruiser makes strange noises in the drop off line at school.
