heads up, coming to a province near you...

I mentioned this to a fella from your club I met in Milton yesterday that after phoning a zillion insurance agents/company's as well as trying to deal with my agent of nearly 15 years, Ontario insurance companies are making it policy not to renew policies for RHD vehicles. Ontario Law mandates that insurance has to be available for all road legal vehicles in the province for all drivers so my policy renewal this year on my RHD got dumped into facility.

The RHD may be 100% legal in Ontario but with facility rates being ridiculous a lot of people will be forced to take them off the road due to operating costs.

Oh and as far as my driving record goes..... in 15 years of driving I haven't even claimed a chipped windshield and never had the pleasure of a speeding ticket.

Pete

that is my biggest beef, you are insuring the driver... what difference does it make which side the wheel is on?

a concern indeed. man, i hope our state farm agent is cool with the 80 and never changes things for us... who knows, this may be my last jdm ever....hang on to it till 2016 and sell out to an american if/when they can still get what will be a 25yr. rig...:meh:

well, they didn't even know or were concerend that it was rhd, just needed it's vin and voila....

what should us ontarians be lookin out for Wayne? any early signs of things following quebec? maybe there aren't too many/enough jdm/rhd's in ontario?? i mean, they're mostly concentrated around the GTA...and just the odd one here and there up north and way east and west...? well except for you, lol.

Romey,
to be honest and blunt (as i usually am) by the time the signs show it is too late.
i am surprised that more from the club are not doing anything (and i posted this up on the old clubs mailing list with NO SUPORT at all and there are dozens of RHD in the old club)

sign of the Canadian people... sheep.

but, you took the first step Romey, you started asking questions.

seriously, we need to trace the ladder to the top ass and find out why they are increasing premiums on a vehicle instead of on the driving record.

I pretty much got the same line with everyone I talked to, including alot of the collector car and specialty insurers. RIght drive ? we dont underwrite but we will insure under facility.

Last year my RHD Pajero would have been under 70 a month or so, this year its 140+ and thats with a crap deductable and its not even underwriten by my usual provider, but under the facility market which is for "HIGH RISK" Drivers Its insulting really. Anyhow from what I was told its for all new policies in Ontario and all renewals, unless your lucky enough to have it skip the broker/agents notice that the wheels on the wrong side hahahah

Also there was no mucking about with names with a Pajero, since they were never offered in Canada, where a Landcruiser was so your rides may end up skating around the rate hikes

i hear ya Wayne... and it's called diffusion of responsibility, unfortunately.

well, as far as i know eveyrone's insurance went up (nothing to do with rhd, at least from what i heard) and i know it was on the news too...but i can't remember what the real reasons were. doesn't help either for me that i'm near the GTA...you guys prolly have half our insurance costs...

but yeah, curious now as to who in the MTO is even gonna think about bugging us rhd drivers and dealers. as far as i know, i haven't heard anything. some one up there has to decide to be a prick and say, let's do what quebec is doing...or if enough dealers lobby against it cuz they're loosing sales...who knows... like i said, we're still a small enough population, and maybe should stay that way to keep under the radar..? god knows what crawled up who's ass in quebec! sheesh!

if anything i thought icbc was the worst when it came to this and out of the blue quebec bites them in the arse. shame.

well, cops haven't bothered me yet. (maybe they would if i had a skyline or supra jdm..?)

(and yeah, ive been reading your other post wayne...it's a clusterf**k of a mess indeed!) just keepin my fingers crossed for ontarians.

i understand completely...
busy lives, the CCMTA, CADA, SAAQ, ICBC, TC all use our busy lives against us. they count on it.

but

the fight will go on and even if each one of us can invest an hour a week it makes a difference on the whole.

cheers and peace

you guys should read into the by-laws(highway traffic act, compulsory automobile insurance act...)

and find out what other remedies are available for 'insurance papers'

most insurance companies only underwrite for limited liability, which means you are only covered for so much...with all the strings attached...

what about taking full responsibility for your actions?? no one will insure you in that case ;) except for maybe for the province/country?

so the other remedies aside from limited liability, are things like financial resposibility cards and surety bonds.

im not advocating anything here and doent take any of this as any legal advice...

issurance is like a wagering scheme, where one bets another no injury/accidents will occurs and in any event one party pays out the others claim...

now if you want your rig covered for every little thing you probably want to pay someone for coverage,
but if you are travelling on your free time(and assume full commercial liability) then there are alternatives.

short story: i got stoped the other nite and pulled out a self-written Surety bond and gave it to the officer for inspection, after 25mins of him doing whatever he was doing, when he gave it back to me and was refering to my bond as my insurance papers.

still the nub gave me a ticket for some lame reason, so i sent the bond into the court for i guess 'judicial review'. let you guys know how it works.

all im trying to say here is that we are all free-men here, and everyone who is responsible and peacefull has the full god-given right to travel freely as he wished, unrestricted. doesnt matter what side your steering wheel is on.

5rdhs ..... mmm perhaps you could start a "postal service" and insure them commercially lol ?

I honestly dont know. I did do my due diligence tho, in fact both myself and my importer must have exhausted the insurance industry in Ontario as a whole. Everyone wanted to Insure this clean record, no claim driver, but none would touch it as a RHD.

The only reason its insured at all is because the law says "Hey big insurance company you cannot deny this man insurance" so big company says "Fine, into facility with the drunks, racers and people that live in Toronto war zones you go"

GL with your renewals tho, and if you skate through maintaining your coverage, gimmie the name of your broker lol. Mines with Intact as the primary provider, who USED to have no issue at all with my RHD vehicles and my old collector cars. Now all of a sudden Im the devil himself cause my Right arm gets the trucker tan instead of my left.

expand on your "self-witten Surety bond"...
as in you are not insured with any company?
very curious, 1 accident in 35 years of driving with a clean record. if they don't want to insure me then i will look at the alternatives.

theres only so much i can explain...
do you have specific questions?

i recomend you go read the highway trafic act, motor vehicle ac and compulsory automobile insurance act...

i am reluctant to share the info on my bond as it could EASILY BE abused.

did you know PROVINCE OF ONTARIO is a company/corporation?
same with CANADA

what can one do when his rig is modified, and he wants to travel freely? yet he is forced to have insurance?
what is insurance? it is proof that someone will be financially responsible in case of injury

i did not know that information.
can you email be direct wayne@crushersrule.com with the info. i have no intentions of causing you any trouble. i have never heard of this before.
someone once told me in the past if you can prove financialy stable with 1 million in assets then you could bypass the insurance but with those numbers i never bothered to look into it. you have caused me to consider this again.
any info or direct directions would be appreciated (email direct if it makes you feel comfortable)
cheers

ya that's all new to me too, interesting info, but unfortunately Id never beable to swear on a stack of bibles that I could pony up 1million in liability protection out of assets.

I seriously do applaud your approach tho, anyone that can stick it to the man and get away with it is ok by me. Just one step closer to genuine independence in a province that yanks every nickle it can from us that follow the laws of the land.

cheers

Pete
