Hi, I am moving from Columbia, MO where I am a Tornado Alley Cruiser member to Austin for a new job. I am interested in getting information on your chapter. Can someone point me to a site for more info?

Also, I am needing transport from MO to Austin for 2 vehicles, one being my LC. If anyone has any suggestions or knows a reputable/reasonable transporter, I would love to hear from you.

Finally, if you have any input on Austin, I would like to hear it, whether it be online or via PM. I will be working near the Arboretum and plan on renting within 5 miles of it- place yet to be found.

thanks,
Jason

The Arboretum is very close to the Rudy's we meet at each month. I don't know if you're looking for an apartment or a house but there are several apartment complexes off of Jolleyville and it's a very convenient place to live. I live and work in the Arboretum area as well. Where is your new job and what do you do?

Thanks for the help. I am looking for a house or townhome to rent. No apartments. I do not know where Rudys is, but I am glad to hear that it is nearby. If you know or see something, please PM me.

I am in the software/IT arena, andsecured a position with a local company there. Look forward to meeting you and the rest of the chapter.

Cheers,
Jason

Doing some research on ISPs- what do you recommend and what do you pay for your package. I prefer a 3.0 or higher download speed. Also, I have a network and do not want to get charged for every PC I want to connect. I know some companies do this, which is bull IMO.

I see SBC has a prety good deal, depending on speed. Any probs with them?

Thx,
Jason

Welcome to Austin, Jason, glad to see another diesel Cruiser headed this way! Don't know what your budget is but if you want to rent a house, look in the Spicewood Springs area or towards 360 (Capital of Texas Highway), lots of nice places around that area and very close to the Arboretum (plus counter traffic flow at rush hour).

Cheers!

Henry,

How many diesel cruisers are around? I look forward to seeing your cruiser. Also, I too have a Jetta TDI that I really like. Thanks for the advice about Spicewood. I will check that area out.
Cheers,
Jason

Jason,

I use the SBC DSL for service at our house. I get about 2.4Mb/s download 420Kb/s upload. It works fine for running VNC to my office workstation. You can just hook up a router and get one public IP address and NAT the rest of them behind the router. They never ask me how many systems I run. I have not had any problems w/ the service/support since I started using it 3-4 years ago.

I have some co-workers who have had to call their service. As for service,...... They often can't see beyond the microsoft basic steps. reboot - retry - reload. They will not touch Unix/Linux. They even will not try to look at the service line if there is a non-windoze system on the circuit.

Arboretum area is very close to two school districts (if you have kids). Ausin and Round Rock IDS. Both districts have good schools. RR is about 2-3 miles north from the Arboretum area. Williamson county starts about 5 miles north of the Arboretum areas also. Auto insurance used to give a break on cost if you were NOT in Travis county.

There are a lot of residential areas w/in 5 miles of the Aboretum. Immediately around the Abor. is kind of high, but it gets a little less as you move out from there. Houses are going through the roof right now. Houses on my street (3 miles north) that were 125-150K 5 years ago are selling for 225-260K this past summer.

Look forward to meeting you when you get in. Be sure to give a hawler if you need any help.

I have Roadrunner cable and am very satisfied with the performance and quality (3.0MPbs+). They are a bit more than DSHell, but they can set it up fast and the speed rocks.
