Head bolt socket (1 Viewer)

So, my friend is supposed to come over at 1:00pm to help me lift the head off. In the meantime, this morning I drove around trying to find a snap-on or proto socket without luck. I did find a slimmer impact socket and thought that I'd try it. I got it home and tried to see if it would fit in the gap. No luck...so, I'm standing there alone in my garage frustrated (and afraid :)). I'm going back and forth...put the breaker bar on the craftsman socket and put it on number one bolt to see if it fit tight and felt good. Stood there wondering if I should pull...walked away for a minute and then went back..............built up a little courage and pulled...It came off pretty easily.

Then I was on a roll and started on the others. They were much easier than I anticipated. I had setup a 4 foot breaker bar ready to go. I ended up using an 18 inch breaker bar to do it. My friends friend is a diesel mechanic and he kind of scared us both. He's the one that was saying that the bolts could be over 120 lbs of torque and how that's a ton for a 12mm bolt. I remember him saying that we might have some bolts breaking off.

Anyway, they're all off now and I didn't really have any problems with any of them.

I used a 12mm, 12 point, 1/2 inch drive craftsman socket that I got from Lowes. I used a 5 inch 1/2 inch extension and a 18 inch 1/2 inch breaker bar and really didn't have to pull too hard to get them off (probably could have used one arm).

(Don't forget the washers on each bolt)

Thanks again for all of the help. This forum is great!!!!!! I needed some tech info and also needed some "through the internet" courage mostly.

Thanks again. I'm going to do a write up/summary of the whole head gasket deal after I'm done.
