I recently rebuilt my A442F and during the first couple of test drives, it drove fine, but felt like it was slipping a bit in first. I figured I would tend to that when I got back from a several week-long work trip.

Well, im back now and the truck won't shift out of first at all. Fluid level is fine. Where should I be looking for a problem like this? I know it doesn't have solenoids so that's not the culprit.

Start with the kick down cable.

Thanks, turned out to be a stuck governor, which ruined the pump. Fixed now, but im still suffering from this horrendous noise when at low speed / idle (and moving in gear).

I haven't looked yet, but does that sound potentially like the crankshaft is slapping back and forth? i.e. bad thrust bearing? Hard to pinpoint where the sound is...

Yes, it does have shift solenoids in the oil pan. The A442 FSM goes into detail on how to test them. Replacements parts #'s are listed in a thread - see 80 Section and the solenoids are available cheaper on Ebay (same as Izuzu). Good luck

It's a '91 HDJ81, should have the fully mechanical/hydraulic A442F, not the electronically controlled version that would have solenoids.

I have the fully hydro A442F in my HDJ81 and wanted to know what rebuild kit you used. Does an A440 or A442F solenoid type work? Do you happen to have the part number for it?
