Hello. Looking for radiator recommendations for a replacement radiator for a 1998 HDJ100L manual. It is in a new to me rig and I am doing some baseline work and replacing the current one just makes since due to access etc. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I have found Aussie Desert Cooler but have been unsuccessful in communicating with them. A source in the US would be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

Excessive, great question. I am wondering if there is something better out there. I know that may be a controversial statement, but wondering if people have an informed opinion based on experience. Additionally, since this is a unicorn of sorts in the US, I am likely looking at shipment from overseas regardless.

People get really fun ideas about bigger radiators being better. Or bad boy all aluminum ones being the best.

Remember that a cooling system is more than just the radiator. The thermostat is what controls the flow. A fan pushes or pulls air across the coils. The coolant itself needs to be in good shape as well.

I bet a factory T.Rad radiator will do the job and last you a lifetime. So long as the entirety of your cooling system is in good shape.

Providing an update on what I did regarding the radiator and cooling system.

I went with a bigger aluminum radiator from Desert Aussie Coolers (Norm was very helpful)

  • I do not think anyone is happy with plastic in their radiators
  • My experience on my personal vehicles and at work says it is not a very rugged material
  • I think the Toyota design works but includes design aspects for mass production and cost considerations
  • I had to order it anyway, so I went with a bigger all aluminum option that can be repaired locally
  • I did change the thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, and all the hoses to include the turbo cooling
  • Lots of other work while I was in there as well
