wondering if anyone has installed the larger 699 in a newer model year. I'm watching GX bob's video and it looks like there isn't too much extra room for the 699.

699: 11 in. x 11.625 in. x 0.75 in
698 (same size as the 678): 11 in. x 9 in. x 0.75 in.

with the inlet/outlets facing sideways, it actually doesn't look like it's longer (top to bottom when mounted sideways). It looks like it's wider. Maybe it will work.

The 678 is a pretty big cooler and can actually over-cool in the winter. I have to block off 2/3 of mine to get temps above 130F when it's below freezing out. So, a 699 might be a bit too big. Mine really never runs about 200F, even when it's well over 100F out, and when towing.

good to know and much appreciated. my use case is towing 4k lbs up 6 or 7% extended mountain grades in 110 degree heat.

I prefer the 698 (same size as the 678) or 699 because they have bypass for exactly your use case. it will redirect the ATF away from the transcooler until it gets to temp. While freezing temps in the desert arent uncommon, it's not the norm thankfully.

btw, really enjoyed driving through MO. Beautiful.

I also tow 4K, and our heat index here can eclipse 110F as well :). I think you'd be fine with a 678, but certainly no harm if you get the 699 with a bypass and can fit it in there.

Glad you loved MO - great and under-rated state indeed. Folks from the desert SW are always amazed how green it is here. I'm always amazed with how big and how far you can see in the SW.

Grew up in New England....love the green. ;-)

Yeah, you guys definitely get the heat and humidity. the steep mountain grades are the variable.

Mine is a '22. This is a 678 on a Mountain Passes cooler mount. I think if you got creative with mounting, it would fit - you may need to adjust the air diverter on the right, but there's some more room if you do some clearancing there as well.

OHHH THANK YOU! wondering what that thing is mounted just outboard of your mounting location. can that be relocated? it actually looks like the 699 is 2.625" wider and that spot may be the best place to attach the bracket for the wider footprint.

gxbob did some carving of that diverter to accommodate. im expecting the same.

kind of funny how nervous i am to start digging into my gx. just got it 2wks ago. such a contrast to my 98 4runner which id have apart in a hot minute.

I would personally relocate the other horn and put it more central rather than cutting or removing the diverter as it's important to ensure that the radiator/coolers get as much directed airflow as it can. I don't know what that little bracket is to the right, but there's plenty of room lower and to the middle - the second horn is a relocated position already from stock.

I just did this a month ago, in early June, so feel free to ask questions as you dig into it some more. I did a 2,800 mile road trip into Canada shortly after installation with 12 hour days of driving and the highest temp I saw via Torque Pro was 198.7F.

that's exactly what i'm planning. i drove out to MD to buy the gx and then went up to RI to visit family. getting it prepared for the drive back to AZ in some scorching heat. Id rather do the upgrades (tow controller, auto folding mirrors, some interior protection (dog), under seat air deflector, phone mount, seat belt blank for the passenger seat (started beeping like crazy when the dog got into the front seat) in 75 deg temps rather than 110.

much appreciated!

BTW, if anyone is interested, I just bought this front bug net. Waiting for it to arrive. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...t_main.11.445118025tWU1S&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa

Figure I'll do the transcooler and this while i'm in there. Still contemplating adding the fork lift to move aholes out of the way that drive 70mph in the passing lane and force everyone to pass them on the right. lol

Just have to ask, how much trans cooling does one need? Unless you're trailering max limits on steep grades, I would think that any added (reputable) trans cooler is waaaay better than only stock. If there's a cooler that fits easily without trimming and cutting, a just plug-n-play solution is what I'd opt for.
Is there that much more cooling for an extra 2.5" of fins? Hummm...

imo..the most i can get with the least modification. its a balance, right? i keep my trucks a long time. 😉

I would just do the 678. The GX460 has a thermostat that should do a good job of controlling temps when cold. I have the 678 and tow 5000lbs with the GX loaded and am happy with the trans temps.

I am going the other direction and installing the Hayden 676. I have the CBI stealth with a winch so trying to conserve real estate Going to do the GXbob method and make my own mounts with some aluminum from a hardware store

Last year I was towing my 3000lb trailer on forest roads and got the transmission temp high warning so this is a needed upgrade. I think it was mainly the low speed uphill driving that overheated things. After 15-20 mins of stopping temps went down and warning went away This should prevent that in the future

Wondering if, after you got the high-temp warning, you changed out some or all of your transmission fluid?
If not, might be a good idea to get some fresh stuff in there. Lots of additive might have been “burned up”.
Great call on the external cooler. They make a massive difference in running temps, and are a must-have if towing.

while i was installing my bug netting i took a measurement between the center support and the headlight. it's about 12.5" of space (width). looks like it will be a pretty tight fit if i go this route. hmm. i really want the 699 because i think the new bug netting is raising temps a bit.
