Hey guys, so Ive been working on my '80 fj40 for quite some time now. I am in the SLC, Utah area. I can't get the dang thing to start, and when it actually starts (with the help of starter fluid) it makes a really really loud noise so I shut it off immediately. Let me list some of the things Ive replaced so far: Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Carb has been rebuilt, Fixed leak in Charcoal Canister, Spark Plugs, Oil filter, oil, gas, and battery. The engine cranks and sounds like it turns over but it seems to be a fuel delivery issue that I cannot find and its frustrating me. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Thanks,

Tyler

start from step 1 do you have fuel in the tank?
2-does fuel get to the pump? line clear?
3-when changing the pump, did you use the spacer?
4-does fuel get to the carb?
5-is there gas in the sight glass?
6-do you have spark?
7-are the wires in the correct order? start with 1 at TDC

what kind of noise is it making?

Look into the throat of the carb and pull on the throttle cable/linkage.
Is there a squirt of gas?

If yes, look at ignition.
If no, look in the sight glass. Is there gas?
If yes, your rebuild probably has a problem.
If no, disconnect the fuel line from the carb and crank. Is there fuel?
If yes, your rebuild has a problem.
If no, you may have bad fuel pump, filter, etc.

OR...you may have a non-fuel problem. Tell me more about this REALLY loud noise.

Could be your ignition timing is 180 degrees off? Easily diagnosed and easily corrected.
