Hey guys(gals) i need some opinions....

My 93 pu has a 3.0 in it. When im driving along the engine temparature is fine but as soon as i stop and start normal city driving stop.....go....stop etc it starts getting hot(it is worse in the summer) but after i get back out to open road it cools back down and runs fine.

After i have driven for a few miles, enough to warm up the engine, i can shut it off and go do something and then when i come back to start it up again the temparature gauge is in the red and it stays there until i get to moving. It doesn't have a cracked block.

So what else could it be. I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, cleaned the radiator out, had the crack fixed in the radiator.

Im very confused about this. Im just hoping someone here can tell me what is wrong or things that are wrong with it.

Is there a shroud on it? Sounds to me like it is having airflow problem. What about the AC condensor, are the fins clogged with mud, or bent over from preasure washing?

Could also be the lower radiator hose sucking shut. but that normaly happens with higher RPM driving. like highway above 3000rpm

well it has a radiator/fan shroud on it.........i will check the AC condenser and fins but ive never noticed them being overly bent.......it runs the best while driving down the highway......

oh yeah when pulling trailers like a 4 wheeler or boat trailer it does it really badly too.

Do you have an custom front bumper and/or off-road lights in front of your grill? These can also disrupt airflow to the radiator......good luck.

According to his 1st post, he has replaced the fan clutch.

Was the new fan clutch aftermarket or Toyota? Was the radiator removed and cleaned out and tested or was it just flushed?

Does it have an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator? If so, does it work? Your symptoms sound like a fan issue.

back a few miles ago i replaced the thermostat. Then a couple hundred miles later the water pump went bad and took the fan clutch with it(im assuming thats why the clutch went out. Me and my dad replaced both of them. All the parts, thermostat, clutch, and water pump were all bought at auto zone so i doubt they are toyota brand.

When the radiator was cleaned out the Radiator repair man took a rod or something like it(i wasn't there since i was in college my dad kept the truck for the week and had it worked on) and cleaned it out. he said it was about 70-90 percent blocked up(i don't remember the exact number).

No i don't not have a custom bumper or any aftermarket headlamps or foglamps.

Could a wrong temp. thermostat(to hot to cool) be the cause of this or would it just cause my truck to run warmer or cooler?

Thanks for all the help and i hope there is still some information so maybe i don't have to take this thing to toyota and pay alot of money getting it fixed.

When the engine temp is high, you should be able to hear the fan. I know on my 91 4Runner 3.0, there was a distinctive roaring noise when the fan clutch was engaged. If you're not hearing it, the fan clutch may not be doing its job. I would also try replacing the thermostat with a Toyota one.

Have you flushed the rest of the system?

i haven't flushed the rest of the system but i guess i need to(a friend of mine told me that i should)

Thanks

I would suspect that autozone fan clutch. You have exactly the symptoms of a fan clutch not locking up. I sell lots of aftermarket fan clutches for BMW's and they are nowhere near as good as OE. And we get german aftermarket. I can imagine what autozone gets for quality.

okay thanks guys i will look about the fan clutch.

Anymore help is still welcomed though.

Would the system needing flushed cause the same thing too??

Are you sure of what was replaced? On the 3.slow the water pump is driven by the timing belt and the fan clutch is driven by the fan belt, supported by bearings on a "bridge" over the timing belt. The two are not connected, I don't see how the water pump could take out the fan clutch?

Im sure i replaced the water pump and the fan clutch. Im pretty sure that in the directions for installation of the fan clutch, it said that a bad water pump could cause a fan clutch to go bad and vice versa. Ill check on that and find my haynes rebulid/tear down manual to make sure.
