How could one tell if your head gasket has been replaced, I bought the truck with 150000 miles and no service records ? please don't say take it out and look

Look at where the head meets the block and see what you can see. Or take some pictures of this area and post them. If the valve cover has been off the FIPG will be some other color than grey, if grey then the vavle cover has not been off. later robbie

thanks Robbie ! :) I looked @ the valve cover and the sealant (FIPG? I think) that is squishing out is cream colored. It looks a little messy, like I could have done it :D Would this mean that someone whent into the head gasket ? Oh, the head gasket only seems to be peeking out @ one little spot on the front, and it's dirty with oil from the valve covers so it may be hard to see :)

psj, I few months back I was wondering the same thing. I never came to a conclusion on mine...I do have red rtv on the valve cover, but I don't think that necessarily means the hg has been replaced. I called the local Lexus stealership and gave them my vin number, they gave me a good service history from their national database...but no hg records

Oh, Now it makes sense that they didn't want to help at first

My fj80 came from Jacksonville fl :)

The valve cover has a rubber gasket. Robbie's probably talking about the timing cover.

I guess mine isn't a gasket but cream colored sealer oozing out from the sides. If it was the gasket I could see it would be solid material stamped out in the shape right? I guess I don't need to waste your time since it leaks oil anyway :D what is the complete valve kit called ?
