Has anyone tried a quick ratio steering box on an 80 series?

My truck is coming together really nice. Very content with everything that we’ve done, but the steering ratio is painfully bad. Has anyone tried replacing the box with a quick ratio steering box?

Maybe some more details on what kind of build you’re doing and what you’re trying to achieve. What’s bad about the steering ratio? It is a Land Cruiser after all. Just need a rebuilt box?

It’s 1997 Lexus LX 450. I’m trying restore it to stock at the moment not looking for any upgrade for offloading only driving it around town down the road in a year or so I’ll think about adding a lift kit bigger wheels bumpers, etc. having driven sedans for the past 10 years, which were all 2010 and above I believe I’m used to having steering wheels with a high ratio now I’m having to turn the steering wheel at least 2 1/2 times around to make a U-turn, then someone advised that I should look into a quick ratio steering box. Is a 1997 after all so no complaints but if there is an option to upgrade, then I’d like to look into it.

Had an AGR box on my old square body Chevy that was wide ratio in the middle/center like 90° or maybe a little wider and then went close past that. Was pretty slick. Bout a turn and a half to lock IIRC. Had a crossover steering set up on a Dana 44. Also ran Royal Purple or maybe Redline synthetic PS fluid(supposedly could run much hotter before puking). Was a sweet set up and I’d also be interested if there was a box for the 80s offered that was similar.

I’m kinda thinking just get used to it if it’s working properly. Trying to compare an 80 to a late model sedan is a stretch. Maybe find a friend with an FJ40 to drive for a couple days to give you a new perspective on the LX?

I suppose I could be wrong, but it's unlikely that there is anything remotely like a drop-in option. Considering the price people are paying for new OEM boxes, I would think we'd know about it if there were someone doing something like that. About the only common upgrade beyond service/replacement (and geometry correction for lifts) is hydro-assist. Honestly, if you have any plans of lifting in the future, I would think a higher center of gravity and a higher ration steering box could potentially be a bad combo in a panic-maneuvering situation.

There is a speed sensitive version of steering box used in 80 series luxury Sahara and VX models.

From memory, assistance is the same at low speed, but It reduces assistance at high speed for a firmer steering feel on the highway.
