Has anyone fitted a tranny from gas 80 onto diesel 80?

Hello all

i have a blown tranny.

I have a 1993 80 with electronic A442F tranny

i was hoping to source a good used tranny from a domestic gas model because the wholesale ones are out of the budget since i spent 5 grand for an overhaul then 7 grand to replace the poorly overhauled engine within the past year.

i was thinking of getting a new valve body from wholesale/outback for that used tranny.

now i understand that this is not an option. is it true that a tranny from a gas cruiser won't fit on the 1HD-T?

i hear they take a different torque and bell housing???

I have a 1993 80 with electronic A442F

Thanks
Matt

Valve bodies and torque converters are completely different.

The A440 is used for conversions for gas and diesel. I think it works with the 1HDT, and almost positive it works with the 1HZ. If you want a domestic gas tranny, I have them in stock, probably much cheaper than wholesale ones.

a442 is electronically controlled, so shifting is the job of the ect ecu and not the valve body.

The diesel bellhousing and torque converter are different. You can swap them over. The throttle cable is probably also different as it runs to the injection pump at the front left side of the engine.

Internally the diesel and gas trannys are identical apart from the diesel having 7 disc and plates in the front clutch opposed to 6 on the gas. Why toyota did this? Because the diesel puts out maximum torque at a lower rpm. Although the 1fz makes slightly more torque it's not until over 3000rpm which is outside of the 'normal' operating range.

So will that be a problem? Nope. Plenty have souped up their 1hdt's and aren't burning out clutch plates. You can always run a little more line pressure then standard.

I saw an ad that showing that West Coast Cruisers has tranny controllers for the A442F. Buy one and you'll be able to adjust your shift points to suit your diesel.

Diesels make high torque at lower RPMs and therefore the tranny has to be tuned to that behavior. So diesel trannys will make high line pressure at a lower RPM. Can this behavior be changed via tranny reprogramming? If not, you'll need to have it rebuilt/tuned. Have you gone to the parting out section and looked for a tranny there?

Toyota specs show very similar line pressures. It won't be a problem.

Hi,

Butting in on this thread - I have a few questions too :-)

Is what you wrote about the A442F tranny correct for the A440F tranny too?
I have an 80 series 1991 model with a 4L petrol engine. I bought a 1HZ engine to convert it to diesel. From what I see, and hear from you guys, I need to replace the bell housing, torque convertor and the cable. Is there something else? Am I missing something ?

Also, if you know of places that sell the (above) stuff I need, such as salvage yards, please do tell - I haven't been able to find them.

Thanks,

Erez

Since the A440F is not electronically controlled, I would think you will need the valve body from a diesel A440F as well.

Answers here are correct. Although i am unsure about line pressure, the valve bodies are different for A440, A442 between gas and diesel.

The throttle cables are different as well.

Since i need a diesels spec torque converter i might as well go extreme, oems are the same price. And to change out the throttle cable i need to get to the valve body, so i'll go extreme VB also........woooot:D:D

You'll need different cruise control cable too.

Here are the cables you need, both for LHD HDJ & HZJ

Forgot to say, procured the Bellhousing, and cables from Dave Japan4x4, better hurry before the dollar drops even more. I could have bought everything when the exchange rate was 90somthing:1 ended up at 72:1......eeeeek

12HT in front of a 3FE A440, with 12HT TC and bell housing.

For the OP...I don't know nuth'n about the guts of the A442, but I'd be inclined to do what Rove suggests. Put a Wholesale VB in place while you're at it. Replace your kickdown cable if it's getting funky, from Dave at Japan 4x4. Transfer the bell housing over. If you get it with the t-case then swap your 1HD-T A442 t-case over to eliminate the VC from the picture. I don't recall comparing the hydraulic lines and the diesel/gas A442 oil pan (for the dipstick tube location), but compare and it's an easy swap if needed as you will have the pan off for the VB anyway.

Have your TC split and cleaned/inspected/rebuilt to ensure its ok due to possible crude from the tranny going bad. Or get a quote on the repair, and compare to the billet TC from Wholesale.

Keep us updated on what route you went how it worked out. It's been two + months.
