I *may* have a lead on some differentials in a junked 62, but I might have to remove them myself. Never done it--any tips?

I assume I have to drain the diffs, unbolt the driveshafts, then unbolt the diffs. Any surprises? Can I get away with just unbolting the driveshafts on one end, or do I have to drop both?

You need to remove the axle shafts. Not too hard for the rear C clip axles, but it means disassembling the knuckles for the front.

For the front, take off the half moon knuckle seal plates, take off the steering arms, pull the knuckle housing with the attached spindle, hub, etc as one unit. The axle shafts will stay attached to the knuckles. The remove the third.

You may want to also take the driveshafts as the bolt pattern on the newer 60/62 is bigger.

Why not take the whole front axle? It should have a nice gusset on the housing not found on the 60 series..

I was thinking whether I should take the whole front axle.

However, I've got the newer 60, so bolt pattern should be same, and I just had mine rebuilt a few thousand miles back--don't want to have to get another rebuild done if I don't have to. Also, the thing got T-boned, not sure if anything's bent.
