Hardie, Smartside, or Certainteed???

Time for siding on the garage project. Hardie, Smartside, and Certainteed are all the same price. I'm leaning toward Hardie at this point primarily due to name recognition.

Any reason why I should use one of the others?

As far as what style, I'm doing a vertical siding, so I'll be putting up 4x8 sheets and overlaying with battens on 16" centers. So the installation I believe will be similar and I'm going to pre-finish them before installing.

I had Hardie on my last house in Georgia. It was painted a med to dark paint color and despite full sun and a high humidity environment it held up very well. Honestly, it was the lowest maintenance part of the house exterior. No warping, splitting, etc of any kind. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

I have no experience with the other products. They may be as good or better.

I went with hardie. The only thing I can complain about so far is that it's damn heavy. I'm going board and batten style, so I'm using 4x8 sheets. They weight about 80lbs each. Hanging them on the 2nd level along is going to be... not so fun.

I've been hanging the Hardie boards, vertical siding and as stated already, them are heavy sumbitches

But, we live in a wild fire danger area and the southern exposure from the sun is brutal on the house so this product was a no brainer for us.

Good choice, Certainteed is very similar but Smartside is not so smart as it's basically wood pressboard.
