I bought my first tacoma in april. it sometimes hard to get into first and reverse when stopped. First gear i just have to push it harder than i think i should have to, to get it to go in. For reverse i have to rev the engine a little or let it roll a little before it will go into gear. is this normal or is something wearing out or do i need to change gear lube...?? all other shifting is fine and the truck is great.

I don't know Tacomas specifically but every Japanese vehicle I have ever owned or driven exhibited symptoms similar to yours described.

Occasionally I would engage 2nd to just "bump" the tranny a smidge of an inch to enable the gear shift to find reverse or first more smoothly.

What year/miles are you talking?

The 89-95 5speeds have shifter bushing issues, as they disintegrate and make shifting tougher. Just a thought before you start thing major tranny issues. The older models' bushings are @ $20 at the stealer.

2001 about 130K. feels like it could be something like a bushing. didn't know what all was in there.

Pull up the boot on the stick, and remove stick. Part of it is at the bottom of the stick, and the bushing seats around the hole in the tranny. If broken/disintegrated, just be careful not to let pieces fall into the tranny while removing them.

Normal for a Tacoma, especially when trying to get in reverse. When it is time for you to replace the
transmission fluid and differencials, you may want to consider putting in Red Line MT-90 synthetic
manual transmission/transaxle lubricant. Mine seems to shift better/smoother.

X2, every Tacoma that I've ever driven, even mine new off the lot has been like that.

I also use Red Line Shockproof 90 in my trans/transfer case/diffs and it is a noticible improvement.
