Hard start after stopping

Just getting my 60 back and putting some miles on, I have noticed one issue. When I stop after I have been driving- it sometimes takes a good 4 or 5 starter revs to turn back on. Other times is barely takes one. What can I check on the carb?

Truck info : carb is newly rebuilt JimC, all smog removed. Motor has factory non smog head. In the mornings the starter barely turns and this thing is running with zero choke.

Is your carb fan hooked up and working? Maybe you aren't doing the secret ritual in the proper sequence. If all else fails, try whispering something sweet into the air vent...

Sounds like a similar setup to mine... I usually give the gas pedal 2-4 long pumps, pull a little choke, and start with my foot off the gas pedal. It usually starts up instantly.

x2 on the carb fan. Also, what is your procedure for starting the engine hot? When cold you need to pump the accelerator pedal to get it rich enough to start. When hot, however, the owners manual says to press the accelerator pedal once and hold it to the floor. This will lean out the mixture during starting. of course you need to release the pedal as soon as the engine catches. I don't always remember to start it hot this way, but when I do it usually starts quickly.

Carb fan is taken off- do I need to put it back on? Mechanic said with Desmog did not need it. I will try the pedal to the floor method today and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help.

I believe the carb fan was a US option due to the SMOG system. The Aussie petrol 60s did not have them, so you're mechanic is probably right -assuming it's set up just like a non-US model (and it sounds like it is). That still doesn't mean you're not getting some vapor lock.

I also start warm by pushing the pedal all the way to the floor and it just takes a second to start.

The carb fan made all the difference in the world for hot starting when I still had the smog equip.

That's why I left it on when the smog stuff got removed.

Put your carb fan back on. It will help cool the carb off and keep the gasoline from evaporating. The hard starts on my vehicles seem to be related to not enough gas in the carb throat and intakes because of evaporation when the engine is warm. I have to pump the accellerator once or twice to squirt some gas in the carb throat and then it starts just great.
Pulling the carb fan as part of a desmog is a good example of "irrational exuberance".

Yeah I am all non usa. Tried holding the pedal down and it started right up instantly.

I too say put on carb fan it also cools more than the carb.Make sure all removed smog holes are plugged.
