A little help here...

My HJ-60 (5 speed manual H55) has just started exhibiting a new 'feature'. A hard shift into 2nd. Most apparent on a cold start, or when it can be most embarrasing to the driver (like going through an intersection!). The funny thing is that it is intermittent...sometimes it shifts like butter, other times it grinds, other times the shifter seems to be jammed and won't go into 2nd at all.

What gives? What should I look at doing first (other than ordering a 12HT + H55 from Greg...)

Any and all advice welcome!

Both my BJ70 and BJ74 do the same thing. I think it is pretty common. After a cold start when I drive away, I just give it a good 2 or 3 seconds after I press the clutch and then I shift from first to second. Before I figured out the delay thing I just would skip 2nd all together on the inital take off. It used to bother me that I have to do little things like that to make it go smooth, especially after dumping 20K into a truck, but I've accepted the fact that there is always going to be 1 or 2 quirks that I have to live with.

double clutch, push in clutch slide stick into N let out cltuch, push in clutch and shift to second you will find the hole tranny shifts like butter like that, I started doing this driving all the new transport trucks at work and noticed the yota shifted better when I was doing it. Also using Amsoil Synthetic gear oil, made her shift alot better both the transmission and transfercase!

Does this happen when you up shift or down shift or both? What if your not moving at all does it still fight you? I've always found it hard to find second when downshifting unless double clutching or moving at just the right speed.

If its real cold sometimes I put the T'case in Neutral and put the trans in gear as the engine is warming up.

Have you checked the fluid levels on the tranny/t-case. I recently discovered my newly notchy shifting was due to an overful tranny.

Thanks for all the advice. Fluid levels are good, double clutching doesn't always do it (although it helps about 1/2 the time) so I'm thinking that the clutch is probably on the way out...just in time for Christmas!!

is it easier to shift if you pick up on teh shifter? if so, new shift seat

the clutches in these truck are tanks the one on mine wasn't replaced until 250 000 and the guy said it didn't really need it, just wanted to make the truck safe for his wife driving it to work.
