Hi guys
just found this forum and am amazed by the content!
I did try and search for an answer but didnt come up with anything along the lines of my problem
I have recently inherited a 11/96 HZJ 75 troopcarrier (this is not the problem!) the hand brake lever will pull up about 10-20mm max and then go solid
1) the handbrk cables that cross the diff move freely -
2) the levers that go into the disk (drum handbrake inside) at the back move freely
3) there is nothing that i can see restricting the handbrake (coins junk etc underneath)
4) if i loosen the cable adjustment the hbrk lever will move up by that amount
Stupid question time...... is it fair to say i need a new handbrake cable? - it seems seized solid at the hb lever end - sorry if this is a dumb question i just cant imagine how this could happen?

thks in advance
cheers
Bill

Welcome Bill and thats a fine inheritance you got there:D

I had a similar problem where my lever would go up and hold the vehicle on a hill but then it would not release unless I got out kicked the cable that ran from one side to the other across the diff.

Anyway ,it was my cable,it was all bound up inside the sheath. When I got it out and inspected, the strands insde had unwound .

If you release the cable, you should get full movement in the lever which would confirm it is the cable that the problem.
I think you are looking at about $150 for a new one,Roodogs might be a little cheaper.

thanks mate
looks like an bit of a messy job -mainly due to the oil leaks from the transfer output shaft having sprayed oil everywhere!
I got given the car essentially for helping someone out -i wante dto pay for it but they claimed it was worth nothing :-)
- they bought it new and after 350,000 not so careful k's she is a bit of a rough diamond - regular servicing from new mean she runs sweet -but has a few clunks (steering) and groans (back door broken form oversize spare) and leaks (rust from visiting all the margaret river surf spots over the last 10 yrs!) at this stage i am just looking to get her operating safely (handbrake, wipers, brakes etc)
thanks again -new cable ordered off ebay !

Free is as cheap as you will get. When you have had enough you can still get a tidy sum for all the spare parts you can pull of it;)
