Before I start ripping into this I thought I would ask for guidance from experience first.

When I try to adjust throttle at start up with the knob to the right of the steering column on my 1986 BJ73 it has heavy spring tension I have to fight while turning to the left and ultimately it will idle up but when I release it it just spins back to its starting position and of course idle drops down. It is making it a bit hard to start on chilly mornings so any input is appreciated

One way of making it easier to turn is to put your foot on the accelerator to take the load of the hand throttle as you turn it
But it sounds like yours is damaged if its spinning back.
Have you tried turning your idling up at the pump?

Thanks, at this point I have not tried that. I figured I can't be the first that this has happened to so was hoping I could get a more precise accounting of the issue prior to scattering parts on the floor :)

Thanks for the reply

Maybe get on your back and look up at the throttle control's threaded rod. Maybe the twisting is turning the entire mechanism.

You may be right, every cable and slider in the thing was frozen up when I got this thing so it could be a correct assumption

Yeah. Otherwise I can't figure how it unwinds. Thread pitch on mine prevents that very thing.

I was pretty busy today wiring up the converter and answering business calls to look too far into it. i think yours is a plausible explanation though and I will certainly pursue that action tomorrow and report back

Probably a stupid question, but are you sure you're turning it the right direction? You say you're turning it to the left (counterclockwise) to idle up? My old 85 BJ70 and 89 BJ74 both turn to the right (clockwise) to idle up.

Turning to the right doesn't do anything. I'm not sure of anything, my truck did not come with a manual of any kind, I'm new to these trucks

Yes ,they definitely are supposed to turn to the right. I think yours is broken and what you are doing by turning left is screwing the whole thing around till its tight and pulls on the accelerator as jblueridge pointed out.
Not much to them

well took it out and the plastic threaded portion of the shaft is broken, so it cannot apply the proper tension to the body allowing the entire cable assembly to turn as stated above. Pity, looks like I will need a new cable :(. Thanks for the help guys
