My '01 LX 470 had the famous ticking noise and when I had someone take a look they confirmed an exhaust leak. So I pulled the manifold with much pain on two nuts on the flange to the next pipe and took a look. It was cracked 1/2 way around the flange on the manifold that connects to the head. I took it down to a weld shop and they put a bead around it for $75. I live in the LA area. So with that, a few gaskets, and new nuts it's back together and fixed. They wanted $800 at the Toyota dealer, and that was without a new manifold which they wanted $400. (after tax). So with about $160 in parts, including the cost of the weld, I figure I saved about $1,000. I did buy a few new tools in the deal, but that doesn't count.

This forum has been awesome for me, and I would like to put back when I can. I did search for a recent post on the topic, but didn't see much, as I was looking at a lot of old stuff that had the best information I needed. Anyway, I'll post down the road if I have any problems.

For me it was a bear of a job, but a lot of patience and trial and error, I managed to get it done in about 7 hours of wrenching and 10 hours of fighting the two nuts, buying some tools to get stripped nuts off, driving around and waiting for the guys to weld up my manifold, and a few trips to Sears for some other tools. I broke a cheap 3/8" eight inch extension, so I had to replace that and wound up getting the last bad nut off because the stud came out. That was with 1/2 breaker bar, two 1/2 extensions, a tool to take rounded nuts of that was pounded on very well, and a 4 foot cheater bar on the end of that. My brother helped me on that one. That's the one we broke the 3/8 extension on too.

Well, job done and I'm happy.

Thanks again y'all

Wow, with all that work you were so close to getting a set of headers on!

I thought the same. But he's in smog nazi CA. Aftermarket headers won't get you through smog tests every 2 years.

Did the Doug Thorley headers not end up getting their CARB EO #? I know they were working on that back in 2010 when I bought mine.
