I'm replacing the 4 spd transmission in my 1982 BJ42 W/3B Engine (NZ SPEC) with an H55F 5 spd and rebuilt transfer case with 5 spd front.

I purchased the H55F 5 spd transmission from Toyota, along with a 3B input shaft, front end of a 5 spd transfer case, new clutch, aluminum bellhousing with tach sensor hole and a transfer case rebuild kit (all from 4wheelauto) . As this is beyond my mechanical knowledge, I'm having my mechanic do it. The driveshafts have also been shortened/lengthened. He just called me and said that the output shaft on the new H55F is approx. 3/4 inch shorter from the rear transmission bearing to the end of the shaft than that of the original 4 speed, which puts the bearing in a different spot and things get misaligned.

Dan at 4 Wheel mentioned he'd get in touch with Wayne at Crusher's Rule on Monday.

Any ideas ???

He might be confused. They didn't spine the later shafts as far as the earlier ones so the input gear of the t-case doesn't slide forward as far as it should. Simple fix is to grind some of the spines out of the inside of the gear. Tougher fix is to find a later t-case.

I'm not sure what transfer case I have - an H42 I think...or H41 ? Which one do I need ?

Thank you -

H41 or H42 are the two different 4 speeds offered. If your case is a split case and it came in a 40 then you have a 34mm case, I believe, and if it's a 3 speed case then you need to get a split case.

He had an H41, so he should have a split case. Lowenbrau seems to be saying there are some difference between early-and-late splitcases.

An H41 does NOT automatically imply a split case. I have two 'Cruisers with the H41 and an old 3 speed single piece transfer case.

The thing you need to ensure is the you have the 5th gear oiler on the transfer case and of course you MUST use a split case type transfer case.

Sorry, I meant an H41 in his 1982 BJ42 does imply a split case. :D

Yes, an '82 should have a split case but that is not for sure either. Some markets get some pretty stripped vehicles.

I've seen an '84 BJ42 with 4 wheel drums and '80 gasser's with 3 speeds. In fact I can find the tranny output gear to mate a 3 speed to a "4 speed" single peice transfer case!

The difference between the early and late splitcases involves the diameter of the output shaft, 34mm (older) vs 38mm (newer), as far as I know.

Idler shaft diameter changes.

There are some changes to the input gear as well over the years between 4 and 5 speed split cases.

Oh you mean mine? And Beast II's :D

Your's must not be Canadian trucks then. I met a 'mudder from Nicaragua a month or so back and his truck was in nice shape but stripped except for OEM A/C.

Beast - Were you lucky enough to find a BJ42 shifter for the five speed as well?

I was told that the shifter from the 4 spd would work fine. But, who knows...

These BJ42's are from New Zealand.

I don't know if the 4 speed shifter works. I don't think it does.

At any rate, if you didn't get yourself the 5 speed shifter from a BJ42 you're going to need to cut a new hole in the floor to accommodate the location of the new shifter. It moves back towards the seat. You'll need to bend the shifter handle or cut it and re-weld it to the proper position for your vehicle. The top plate that locates the shifter is different for various H55 applications. I've been told the 5 speed in the 42 is hard to find.

I just found a used 5spd shifter from SOR along with this stuff:

066-071A-U 1 U 5SPD SHFTLEVR-
066-072A 1 LEVER BOOT-
066-074A 1 CAP SHIFTLEVER-
066-075A 1 SPRING SHIFTLEV-
066-076A 1 BUSH SHIFT-
066-070A 1 SHIFT KNOB-
116-13C-A 1 Transmission Hump Gasket Set-

I've heard that the BJ42 LX models have a different tranny hump. Hopefully my transmission hump will work with this new shifter.....

The used shift lever from SOR is for RHD? Did all of the SOR parts come out of a BJ42LX RHD?

If you look at this diagram at toyodiy.com look at part number 33121, Cover. That cover is specific to the vehicle model. A BJ60 cover for the H55 places the shifter lever in a different location than the BJ42. Be sure that you're getting that cover too in the part you ordered.

Good point. I just assumed they did. I will call them tomorrow to verify.

Wondering if the transfer case input gears can be replaced to allow for the larger H55F spline ?

Otherwise, the newer used transfer case @ SOR is $1200 + install + rebuild.....jesus.
