How hard could it be? The old tranny was out and all I had to do was plug up the new one. A few bolts and it's done.

Not without a fight. If Toyota offered a SST tranny install tool I think I would buy it. All I have to work with is a floor jack, a near worthless tranny adapter, and a Powerpuller. Again I looped a tow strap around the front edge of the roof and angled the winch line of the puller and down through the hole in the floor to lift the tranny. Had to do it this way last March when I replaced the clutch in the 60.

Got the tranny on the jack and strapped down and now came alignment. I have some cut off bolts I use for this this, but it's still one big wrestling match to get the tranny lined up and shoved in. But now it's done.

T-case rebuild on Monday and install on Tuesday and the red 60 should be back on the road.

If you get tired of fighting with it I'll come by and pick it up from you.

Good luck with the install an over drive would be nice to have.

The fight is over:D.

Both the lower 1st gear and OD are nice. I've had a H55F in this 60 for the past 6 years. The new tranny is replacing the older H55F of unknown rebuild history that was giving me problems.

Could rebuild the old one and sell it. A friend of mine rebuilt his, complete with DIY SST's.

rebuild kit is almost 400 and the synchros are only available from toyota for close to 500 with discount. Still a better deal than buying new but would be hard to find a buyer when you can buy a new transmission for relatively cheap.

Why do I know this? -I am trying to suppress all urges to ask Jim how much the old trans is worth to him in custom fab work...

Holy :censor: !!!!!!!!!

That's crazy. I guess if the synchros aren't shot then it's not awful, but I'd be inclined to say if you've got it apart you might as well do the whole thing.

What are the issues with the old H55

Increasing gear clash when shifting between 1-2, 2-3, even 3-4, plus difficulty in getting it into and occasionally out of gear. It's also pop out of 1st in the on-load/off-load transition but it had been doing that for the past 100k miles.

I think most, if not all, is due to synchro wear and not bearing wear as the bearings were not noisy.

Be glad to talk about it but I want to pop the cover and have a look inside, and it would need a rebuild. The F/H input shaft has some value. I also have an extra t-case that should work with it (no shift linkage though), the H55F rebuild manual that I could copy, and the t-case rebuild section from the FSM. I also have a FJ40 shifter with the H55F tip grafted on.

As far as I can tell the inside of the old H55F looks ok, but I did not take any measurements of the thrust clearances between the gears.
