Hello,
I'm a new member and am glad I found this forum!! I recently purchased a FJ62 from the original owner who was my father, I was able to keep it in the family. Its over 200K but has been dealer serviced all its life and sat in the garage during michigan winters for the last 20 years. As any vehicle this age it needs some TLC to address some idle issues and random misfires at idle.

My question to the forum is concerning the operation of the H4 & L4 operation.

I was engaging the 4WD system checking its operation, when using the H4 button all is well and the front axle is engaged.
When selecting L4 via the stick I achieve low range but the front axle is NOT engaged.
To engage the front axle & L4, the H4 button has to be selected. Does this sound correct?
I seem to remember that using L4 should engage the front propshaft?
If I am reading the owners manual correctly it indicates the same as what memory recalls?

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome and congrats! that's an awesome looking 62.

Yes, in 4 low / Ful stop + shifting into 4L when in neutral will engage 4WD.
You shouldn't have to push the 4H/4WD button, however, the light will/should turn green when you engage 4L.

I'd start with double checking the basics, making sure you're actually in 4L ( can you drive around in 4L? )
Any other transfer case related issues?

After that its time to dive into a factory service manual in order to understand and check the different components that make the 4WD system work.
Start crawling underneath there, checking the wires etc. Search this forum for the FSM, its easy to find. Good luck!

At the top of the MUD screen is a menu bar. Navigate to Resources/Toyota/Land Cruiser/60 series and download the 1984-1990 Chassis manual. Look in the transfer case chapter in the section for "Electric Shift type" There will be wiring diagrams and troubleshooting procedures.

Good luck!

For 4 wheel drive to work in either high or low range you need to lock the front hubs. The dial indicates the lock and free directions. Turn the hubs to lock and then engage the H4 button for high range 4WD, if low range is needed also shift the t-case handle to low range.

The vacuum solenoid on the firewall shifts the t-case between 2 and 4 wheel drive. This solenoid often fails preventing the shifting between these two functions.
