Hey was just wondering if anyone has ever done a rebuild on a h150F my 2nd gear syncro is worn and only likes shifting down if I double clutch and rev match her. How much would I be looking at to get it rebuilt or doesn't anyone have/had this issue and how did you resolve it. Also have a small leak coming from the back of my gear box suspect input shaft. Can anyone reccomened someone around Perth area? HJZ80R 1HZ 1993 FACTORY PART TIME 4WD H150F BOX. Cheers!

I had this exact issue happen to me sometime around 13 years ago, it also effects first and third too. Still haven't gotten around to fixing it either, just changed the way I drive to suit.

Perth Scotland or Perth Australia?

Perth Australia has a good gearbox workshop , its called Belmont Gearbox and Differential specialists. They are NOT in Belmont, they are in Wangara.
Ive had 2 diffs and h55f rebuilt there, great guy and no problems. Most of their work is Toyota landcruiser.

Address: Unit 1/17 Finlay Pl, Wangara WA 6065

Cheers mate.. Will give them a bell

If you haven't already, try changing to a different gear oil first
$50 of oil can make a huge difference.

Castrol VMX-M is a good option, but there's others.
Same grade oil, but lighter weight ( 75 weight vs 85) and different additives

Yeah I've heard that's the go. I'm crossing the nullabor a 2 day drive across Aussie. So I'd rather rebuild than mask it up.

Don’t bother rebuilding your box... keep an eye out for a VDJ gearbox instead. You can pickup a low km one for around $500 and just need to swap the input shaft over. It’s a pretty easy swap, takes a few hours and doesn’t need many tools. There are a number of improvements plus the box will have less than 100,000km so practically new. (I’ve bought several boxes for $500 ranging from 33,000-78,000km). Much cheaper than the required syncros to rebuild yours, plus you can do it yourself without needing to pay labor.

I wouldn't necessarily call it as masking up anything.
My old HDJ80 (H151) was a total PITA to down shift, I was double declutching constantly.
Changed out the oil and after a 1000k or so it was absolutely chalk and cheese.
Same deal in my current FZJ80 (H151). It was a bear to drive when I got it, changed the oil and it continued to improve for a few thousand Kms.

Castrol VMX-M was developed with Mitsubishi to solve an issue they had with synchros in a new series of gearboxes.

The H15# boxes are sensitive to what oil goes into them.

Sweet I'm still going to try this before I rebuild see how she goes cheers

Hey mate I’ve got a near new VDJ H105f I’m swapping with the H105f already in my 80. Apart from the input shaft and swapped bell housing/bearing retainer is there anything else I’ll need to change? I’ve been quoted a ridiculous amount to do this and they also seem to think they need to change my clutch and flywheel.
I’ve purchased a new input shaft that’s the same as the one already in my car.
Thanks heaps

It’s not the parts it’s the labour - you pretty much have to tear the box right apart to swap them. You don’t have to change the clutch, but if it’s an old one it might save labour later to do it now

cheers, I’ve got a quote that makes more sense now however I haven’t pulled the trigger because they’ve told me I need to use a HDJ79 input shaft and not the Hzj80 one I already have. Which from what i can read doesn’t seem correct.

It also means I’d need to change clutch and flywheel to support 14 spline, which I’m trying to stay away from as mines almost brand new.

Looks like the same input shaft part number applies for HDJ80s and HDJ79 with H151, so 14 spline.
Given the same part number was used, you should be able to use your original input shaft.
All other adjoining parts such as synchro rings etc all seem to have same part numbers across all H15# series boxes

They’re wrong, I have put an HZJ80 shaft in an H150f from a VDJ79. The only difference between an HDJ79/80/100, VDJ79 and HZJ80 shaft is the spline dimensions- internally they’re identical.

Frankly, If the shop is saying this Id go elsewhere as they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about
