Guinness World Records - Travel & Transport - Epic Journeys - Longest Driven Journey

Here is the one I was thinking of, seems like there is another out there too. This one may be a gasser, but there is a 3B in OZ somewhere with a similar record.

I have seen that vehicle, they passed through New Zealand this year, it was parked at my local supermarket.

It's petrol powered and their blog shows it being rebuilt at 381,000 miles.

Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - Page 035-Engines

There's a good starting place to source a half cut. They've got 2H, 12H-T(:hillbilly:), and 1HZ in stock apparently. Almost everything you need. Still some fab work you'll need to do though, as they are RHD units. I'm sure a fellow mudder near you would be willing to help you out or there might even been somebody nearby to help you along with the swap if they've done one previously.

We are originally from the Canoga Park area and I have spent many a weekend staring at their cruiser yard. One time they had an extra cab flatbed pickup diesel that they had brought over in a container. Absoultely the best form meets function I have EVER seen:). Unfortunately at that time I was paying for college :frown: and had to live on drive bys hoping to catch a glimpse of this magnificent cruiser. Almost hoping to find a frame and that body and put them together with a diesel motor.

I agree whole heartedly with Tofu, but my only point of contention with him is if you read the importation paper work, any vehicle sold AS NEW in Canada is LEGAL for importation to the USA at any time through all the usual legal means with usually NO MODIFICATION at all, and therefore, if you felt like it, you could buy a brand new truck in Canada, and then import it back to the states. So, buying an 87 HJ60 from Canada (assuming it met what you are looking for) would be perfectly legal as long as you did all the paper work right because the HJ60 was sold in Canada as new.

There is legitimate differing on this point. I have had a very long and detailed conversation with Ms. Rena Lee at USDOT (1-202-366-7982). She has told me that in order for a Canadian vehicle (different from what was sold in the States) to be eligible for entry prior to the 25-year rule, would be if someone went through the expense and time to certify a make and model as conforming to USDOT/NHTSA as well as USEPA regulations. No cruiser has been, last time I checked. Canadian issue '87-'88 HJ60s would be commonplace in the States if this were not correct.

The trouble withn the loophole you imply is that Toyota will NOT furnish the infamous "letter". Their have been forgeries, and people HAVE gone to jail attempting to pass them off as legit.

IF your still looking for a diesel? I have an 85 bj60 in really good condition that already title in fl.with the 3b 5speed a/c powersteering ect. If you want to see what it looks like just visit the florida landcruiser assocition home page under forum, august run and its the blue 60.

I guess it all comes down to who's doing the talking, and I'm more inclined to listen to DoT and EPA than our state's RI reps. They're the ones who told me that one could import a canadian truck no hassle. Either way, it's out of my price range to consider importing a truck at the moment, so I guess by the time I'm ready to import a truck, it'll be legal under the 25 year law.

Lots of great info about the engines. 2h engines run forever in our neck of the woods (tanzania), but 1hz are even better as they continue to be sold in new African spec LC 70's.

--except for when the 2h cracks--like mine has--in the cylinder sleeves. Engine rebuild time for me...

I would buy a fj60, plus a 12ht half cut w/ 5 speed tranny. 1hz is better, but 12ht a lot less work for a fj60 swap.

Looked at the Florida Association page but couldn't find the pic. Would definietly be interested though.

Correcting the run BJ60

Sorry about that...the correct run is under the FL Landcruiser Association home page and hit the Forum, then the FLCA Meeting/Trail rides. Then go to the Richloam Run June 21st on the second page. After that go to the fourth from the last "Bad 80" and hit the slide show. I have the Blue/gray 60 with a snorkel /winch. If you need more pics, email me at ctuna74@hotmail.com and I'll email them to you.

ctuna 60

Great Pics! Looks great for a starting point for us. H motors seem to be popular, but your BJ60 could fit the bill. If you've got interior pics that would be great. Sent you an email, would like to hook up on the phone if possible. Thanks.

Was it a 75 series?

75 series??

Was it a 75 series?

Don't really remember as that was 10 years ago. I would have to say it was mostly like the bandierante from SA with a flat bed. Saw a body on eBay awhile back, almost pulled the trigger. Really like the function of the crew cab in a LC. Hoping for 4 doors for the family. By the way, looked at eBay AUS and saw a few things, but not clear on importing. Gonna look at some importing threads and try to figure this out.

There are several BJ60s about in the US. I used to have one and loved it. It was a bit loud, but considerably quieter than any Cummins could hope to be.

The 3B worked just fine for me on the freeway. I've read a lot of posts talking down it's highway performace. Mine did fine. It could hold 75-80 in 5th on the flats with 3.7s and 31". You have to down shift on long or steep hills and may have to stop speeding momentarily, but that's the price of good fuel economy. Low end torque is sweet. Great little engine. Doing the swap isn't trivial, but there is a lot of experience on these boards to help you out.

That said, I've been spoiled with an auto tranny and already have one in great working order. I have driven an HJ60 with auto and it was plenty drivable and noticeably quieter than the BJ. I plan on going with an H-series engine: 1HZ or 1HD if I can find a good deal. Most likely a 2H or 12HT to save the pocket book and make the conversion feasible for me to do mostly myself with my newbie skills.:wrench:

(Interesting note about letter forgeries. I imported my BJ rust bucket under the 25 year rule. I'm a little surprised that Toyota won't write the letters of conformity. It should be a stock letter with the number of requests out there. Maybe it is to force people to consider buying a new engine.)

Hey there, Tex, what are you finding on your import search? Spring is coming and I think you are gonna need a project!

Sandcruiser's HJ60 may still be available. It needs some lipstick and rouge in my opinion, but it is a definite starter kit for your diesel fetish. It's priced right, has LHD and comes with the 2H. The great thing about this truck is that the add on turbo opportunity contains a variety of ready made kits and DIY options if you are interested. Driving the 2H before and after installing a turbo is something I want to experience!

I have every confidence in his rig, and have no hesitation driving it thousands of miles. It would be fantastic to see it go to a home where its loved.

I have no financial stake in making a sale, however I am looking for a one way ticket north pretty soon, so I'm reiterating my offer for (almost) free delivery.

So, ya fixin ta git?

Rick

Would be interested, but haven't seen pics yet.

In 2004 I bought a newly imported JDM 87 HJ 61 out in western Canada and drove it home. Great machine top notch quality I also had a HJ60 in the family it was a real tough truck and had over 400th kms on it. In my opinion the 12HT is a really nice motor to have and requires very little upkeep. Rust is a problem in eastern Canada our HJ 60 was full of it and my HJ 61 is babied and rust sprayed and I do all I can. Don't be afraid of a 2h or 12ht motor the 2h is very basic and simple to work on and it does lack high speed power but with that said it will get you where you need to go. Our 2H was kinda rough around the edges I had a pull cable to stop the motor and had a few work arounds but the thing always ran. From My Experence it has been much more enjoyable driving on the right hand side then it was trying to restore our HJ60 back into service. Imports from Japan are like turning back time. Priceless in the long run!

No thread, but it is on the web: Adventure Motors Costa Rica

As you probably are aware, all the Cannuk trucks were auto. And as my blog reading reminded me, they didn't come with A/C for some reason.... So go Auz and come out ahead with a 5 speed and A/C compressor and mount!

Rick

Uh......not sure where you got that info about the auto and air. I had to search hi and low, through probably 100 ads for HJ60's before I could find one with automatic trans! My wife wouldn't drive a standard. Also, I never saw one without A/C. Both my daily driver and parts vehicle have auto and A/C.

In regards to the 24 volt, it's not so bad once you figure out (from this site) how to set up a little 12 volt system through a converter to a third battery. I've never had any problems with any 24 volt accessories. By the way, everything, including the bulbs and cigarette (power) lighter are 24 volt. The only thing that isn't are the head lights which take 12 volts equally from each battery.
Having said all of that, if I had the choice, I suppose that I would choose the 12 volts!
