NOT YET, BUT SOON

Cruiser Brothers is North American agent for both Long Range Automotive and Kaymar. We have adapted a range of Australian tanks in conjunction with LRA and returned Friday night from our annual pilgrimage to Lilydale (Melbourne) to visit both firms. As a business issue and as the owner of a 2013 GX, the development of an auxiliary tank for our vehicles (5G 4Runners as well) is a priority. We have done so for the Prado 120-based GX and 4Runners and that kit is in production. We are currently in the process of doing the same for the 150 family, it is just going to take some time as we are seeking to accommodate KDSS (not so on the 470/4Runner kit).

Not a sales pitch, but a "heads up" for those considering the DIY approach using new or used sub tanks from the other side. We have seen many such projects started, but few finished for the later rigs. 21st Century emission and smog systems on GX and 200 Series are way different than a 40, 60 or 80 Series. Our tank kits are designed to work with US emissions and they do that as built. We do not see error codes or check engine lights resulting from the correct installation of our kits. They pass smog as well.

LRA is currently scheduling a Prado 150 with KDSS to be in their shop in Lilydale for assessment, measurements, mock ups, etc. Following that, we will receive a template in USA for modification at Valley Hybrids (Cruiser Brothers GM/owner Georg Esterer's crew) to fit/cut/measure and photograph. Then we send the data back to Australia and LRA Engineering puts it in CAD, cuts us a prototype and United Air Cargo delivers us a tank for our first install.

Yes, it will take a while. And yes, it will be more expensive (maybe) than buying new or used components and then figuring it out. The good news is that it will work. We have made a lot of mistakes along the way and are actually pretty good at this stuff - following in LRA's giant footsteps with an American spin.

No, we do not know what the exact capacity will be due to constraints of clearance for the KDSS gear. Likely it will be between 24 and 30 gallons - TBD.

If you are interested in an auxiliary tank for your GX 460, there are three things you can do:
  1. Get on the GX wait list by sending an email to ward@longrangeamerica.com. Provide your name (first/last), billing address, phone and (or course) email. We will add you to the list and provide updates on progress.
  2. Figure out what you are going to do for a spare tire mount, since the tank will replace the tire in stock location.
  3. If you like the Kaymar rear bar/carrier system (see attachment) then consider ordering now. We are starting to ramp up inventory but will be on pre-paid order basis with monthly arrivals by sea freight/container. Kit price is $2,995 with dual carriers, lights, etc. plus motor freight from Stockton, CA.
Here's the sugar on top. If you order a Kaymar, along with the tank, we will take $200 off the bar kit price.

Questions/comments/suggestions welcome - Ward Harris, 209-636-0831, ward@longrangeamerica.com

Will there need to be any armor/skid plate for the tank or will it be tucked up high enough to not be an issue?

Depends on final configuration and how you wheel the truck. It will be up there pretty far.

Nice! I'm just an overlander, generally pretty mild but just want to make sure the departure angle isn't compromised. I leave the rock crawling to the early model 4Runners and Toy pickups with exo-skeleton cages and 40" tires.

I am eagerly awaiting this product. I was told by the end of the year, hopefully that's still the case.

Most of the tanks I've seen that replace spare tires or OEM rear-mounted tanks usually don't hurt your departure angle. As per the pictures, they are lowest right behind the rear axle, and slant up towards the rear bumper. If you draw the angle line, the tank won't interfere.

I suppose this doesn't mean they're immune to trail damage, but for "overlanding" you should be perfectly fine.

Correct. We have the 40 and 42 gallon kits in 80, 100 and 200 Series as well as 30 gallon kits in the FJ Cruiser and have yet to hear of any serious contact from owners. Seems to be a matter of good design (as you have described) plus common sense on the part of the operator.

This is high on my priority list for mods on my '15. I will be getting on that waiting list.

Just send me an email with name, billing address, email, phone and will get you on the list. When kit is confirmed for production and price is set, we will take orders with $500 deposit. ward@longrangeamerica.com - thanks!

Sent my email in a few days ago, very excited.

LRA Aux Fuel Tank is currently being developed!!! I brought my 2015 GX460 to Georg and Ward at Cruiser Brother and Valley Hybrids in August. Long Range Automotive owner Arnie flew in all the way from Australia, measured, configured, and mock-fitted the LRA Aux Fuel Tank under my GX. The complete tow hitch assembly had been removed as I have the rear Dobinsons bumper. The spare tire assembly was also removed. Georg, Ward, and the crew at Cruiser Brother are amazing folks and the place is a Land Cruisers haven and heaven! The 460 mocked aux tank is currently back in Australia for additional engineering for the prototype model. I surmise that once the prototype is test fitted in my GX 460, the production version model will roll out shortly.

Copy and paste the link (cannot link FB directly here) for pics and tutorials.

I would assume somewhere in between $1200 and $1600 like the others.

$12XX something, I think. I asked to max out at 33 gals. The KDSS took some space away, so, originally it was about 27-gallon capacity. We just have to wait and see. So excited and can't wait! Will advise.

I'm curious about the operation of the tank once installed. Is there a switch to change which tank you're drawing from when driving? Is the siwtiching of the fuel source automatic? Anyone with experience or knowledge would be appreciated.

I believe you flip a switch and it pumps from your auxiliary to your main tank. I read a comment the other day where somebody said they turn the pump on when they're at about a quarter tank and within 30 minutes or so the main tank is full.

Definitely pay the minimal extra money to upgrade to the faster and quieter pump, the one that comes with is slow and noisy.

The engine fuel supply is entirely fed from the factory tank. When the factory tank gets low, you flip on a transfer button and transfer fuel from the AUX tank to the factory tank to refill it.
