GWNF (Virginia) Saturday (2/24)

I will be at GWNF (2nd Mountain Trail and Long Run) this Saturday (2/24). We are meeting at Waffle House on Route 33 (1/2 mile east of Route 81) in Harrisonburg, VA at 9:37 a.m. The trail starts only about 15 minutes from there.

I think 2nd mnt is gated. You might want to make sure that it's open this time of year.

Yeah... I called the ranger. 2nd Mtn is closed at the bottom, but you can get to it from above (Long Run Rd). Also a tree fell across it this week and it hasn't been cleared yet.

I also heard the Dry River Road / Salt Shed (where one of the COo.oOL mudholes are) is closed until 4/1/07.

I figure we will find stuff that is open, because there are plenty of trails out there.

I think Dry River is gated after where you would turn off to go to Salt Shed. I was just there on the 10th.

We did a nice run starting at Union Springs, going to the top near Flag pole then coming down Dunkle hollow to Skidmore. Then we hit Salt shed on the way out.

There was about 6" of snow, It was a blast.

I can send you a map of the GPS plot if you’re interested.

Maaaaan I would love to go. I'm gonna be in town and everything but I have a leaky rear axle seal and I am going to Iron Pig to pick up my locker. Chyea.

I was actually thinking about heading up to reddish knob on saturday night though. Don't know if it'll happen, just tossin around the idea.

I guess I saw this thread a week too late, anyways I thought some people may be interested in knowning that the word on the street is they are considering shutting down 2nd Mtn permanently as well as Raider Camp Hollow (somewhere nearby that most aren't to familar with). Some local hunters are very apposed to this but I do not know if their voice will be heard. So my suggestion is if you ever want to try out 2nd Mtn do it soon b/c it might not be around too much longer.
