Well I installed the newly-set injectors (155kg/cm2) tonight. At first, I had quite a bit of white smoke, but that went away as I bled the injectors. I brought the idle down to what I think is normal, then tried blipping the throttle. It wasn't revving up very well, so I slowly increased the fuel enrichment (which you may remember was backed way out to stop the smoking and limp home), little by little. I test drove it and it has LOADS of power (very nice!). I think it's a significant improvement over the performance prior to all of this work. It starts easily and runs smoothly, with plenty of power in all gears. :bounce:

Two concerns remain however, mainly that it still does emit a slight puff of white smoke when you"blip" the throttle, and though it was dark, it was my impression that it was smoking slightly out on the road.

Also, the idle climbed as I adjusted the fuel enricher, and even backing the idle screw all the way out would not bring it down to the previous setting. I'd say it's at about 1000rpm, but of course with no tach it's all speculation.

So....the good news is that I can now drive her, and that I conclusively proved that 125bar was too low for this engine. The bad news is that a timing/pump/injection problem still exists and must be sorted out. Perhaps the opening pressure is even higher?

I anticipate the arrival of my factory manual any day (really disappointed with the Ellery manual and it's complete lack of information on the 88-90 3B-2) and I hope to find the information I need to take her to the VW dealership to check my pump timing.

What a saga. I just want to say Moose that I'm sorry you had to go through this, but I sure have learned a lot from all your posts! :flipoff2: Maybe someday I'll have a melt down and I can return the favor.

Here's to hoping you've got this figured out  Cheers

Did I meet you at Pismo???

Anyway, I live on te same part of dirt that moose does and hope to see his vehicle one day.

Regardless of the inherent problems he has incured I suspect he will have it running well in short time.

With any used vehicle you will encounter typical problems.

Good luck,

Nope, haven't been in Pismo in 10+ years and I didn't have a TLC at the time. This is a meet/swap right? When is it held?

I have the idle figures out, the throttle plate on top of the pump is split, and there is an adjusting screw. I now have it turned down to normal. Still a touch of white smoke though, even once it's warm (lots on cold start-up).

interesting reading in the 2LT manual. the JDM rotories are set to deleiver less fuel than their euopean and austrailian counterparts...
i cranked my wife's up 1 1/2 turns and the puppy moves nicely now. it does not feel like a 2LT at all now...
