What were they thinking making it a Monday to Friday event? Wednesday to Sunday would make more sence unless everyone wants to wheel for 10 days and most of us can't get that much time off at once.

And if you dont want to camp 20 minutes from the trail all the registration gets you is a trail pass and a tee shirt.

what days is everyone going? I want to go this year! Mon - Fri is a little odd. I would like more info about where to stay what spots are good, how much $ over the $125 it should cost me, anything else etc!!

71 I'm pretty sure they are trying to cut down on the number of people a little bit. It has been getting pretty huge.

In the past it was held from wed. through saturday. We always show up a day or two before the start. The trails are less crowded and more availablity for campsites. Those of us who have an 18 hour drive would much rather have it end on Friday evening. Driving home on Sunday and starting back to work the next day is not fun.

Besides, the trails and campsites are a lot busier on saturday and sunday.

Camping at Crawfords, although nice facilities, would be a royal PITA for myself and anyone else with a highly modified rig. It is about a 45 minute run from the trails to the camp. Drove my rig there for the safety inspection last year. Not fun on trail 1.

Looking forward to coming up for it again this year. We will be camping along the river, as usual.

Crawfords is a PITA. The only time I made it last year was for tech inspection as well. Camping on the TN side is the way to go.

Where? I have never been up there. It seems liek everyone wants to give general answers to questions like this. I havbe asked several places and times about where to stay at GSMTR.

On the contrary, they are trying to allow those who travel such looong distances to be able to enjoy the last two days events in comfort as opposed to being packed up and heading out immediately after the raffle on the last night. This is coming from Roger T. when he talked about it at the CottonLand - Southern Cruiser Crawl event.
Essentially, alot of people will be there the 2 days after the event but the "goings on" will take place during the week so all can enjoy, not just people who live within 5 hours from the venue. There's even rumor of an optional rafting trip early in the week of the event. Sounds more fun than ever, plus the early part of the week, the trails are dead and very cool to see nothing but cruisers out there...

Camping at Crawfords is included in the registratiopn fee but it is a solid 30-45 minute drive from the trails (especialy w/ 38s). Last year the Joe reserved a campsite for the Leaky Seals and CottonLand folks which is much closer to the trails. There are a ton of good camping spots along the river and towards Tellico Plains but you better get there early GSMTR to stake out a spot.

I will likely be geting there sometime between Saturday and Tuesday depending when everyone else shows up.

I believe the rafting is on Wedsday. Natahalla river.
We noticed Natahalla signs coming from Tellico Plains
to Murphy via #68. I've done that river in a raft and it is FUN!
It's name means river of the noon day sun. That's the ONLY
time the sun hits it. Cold water.
While at MLK I saw kayakers doing the Tellico river.
Holy shivers.
Brrrrrrrrrr....I thought the Cruiser crowd was tough.
I agree the Tenn side is the best way to go for GSMTR.
Spivey is nice and along the river camping is too. North River
and McNabb are also there.
UC usually rents the chalet for several days. Details
to be decided.

We have been going to GSMTR the weekend before it starts for several years so M - F is OK with me. I didn't make it last year, but my sons tell me that Crawfords SABO, they only went over for the tech inspection and the raffle.

I guided the Nantahala this past summer. Worked for River Runners, and cold is an understatement. The year round temp of that river is a brisk 42 degrees. The reason for that is b/c the water that makes that river runnable comes via pipeline from the bottom of the Nantahala lake, which is about 400 ft deep in some places. COLD! Whew, makes me shiver just thinking about that water. I can't imagine rafting in it this time of year.

I watched as the guide sent several paddlers off a drop off. Real kewl.
Then HE did a nose dive UNDER the water. Incredible. The others guys
were yelling and cheering as he came up. NUTS! This was the Tellico River
but it was snowing and the rocks were covered with ice. Not me.
I mean the ATV guys we helped right the ATV had ice in their beards
and they weren't IN the river.

Sent my registration out today. Change in dates is a bonus for us in SF - it's a royal pain hauling butt home Sat. night and getting in late Sunday. Last year the SF crew shorted out in North Georgia and I boogied back on my own - what a PITA.

Now what to do about the Friday night Upstate Cruisers party??? Other than the raffle, that's the big event I'll be looking forward too :D

Damn Bill! You always hit the 'shine too hard at these Upstate Parties. Follow my lead for once, only sip a few during the evening, and you will realize that the Upstate Party is always held on Thursday! As I always retire long before midnight, you late-nighters make it drag on into friday......:flipoff2:
