But also pretty much impossible for rocks to hit with round flanges.......did you ever need a pinion guard with your toyota rear end?

Absolutely. You're telling me you've never seen a u-joint cap that's been drug around on rocks, causing breaks or at least difficulty in removing the joints later on?

I've talked at length with one of my buddies, who has a 40, about how to design a pinion/u-joint guard for a land cruiser differential.
 
Everytine i've broken a u-joint it ruined the ears on the d-shaft so no that wasn't a problem......just tack weld 'em and rock out (on the rocks lol). Pinion guards make it a real pita to change a d-shaft too if you don't have much room over the axle
