Hi guys,

So Moto-rage finally got my GRJ76K done with a whole bunch of mods. Looking for recommendations on shock upgrades. I'm running 285/75/16s and they will rub at max lock with the stock suspension. I need a 2 inch lift to clear them. Currently considering the BP-51 by OME and Kings Remote resevoir shocks. I can get both from Australia and the price is comparable with the BP-51s being slightly more expensive.

The Kings shocks come with spring and extended rear shackle to get the lift. i also have to weld the brackets on for the remote res which I'm hesitant to do. The BP-51s come with the whole package including:

BP5160009 SHOCK: TOYOTA 76/78/79 FRONT 2
VM80010006 KIT: TOYOTA 76/78/79 FRONT 1
OMESD24 S/DAMPER LC 60 70 75 80 1
FK19 SWAY BAR SPACER KIT-70SERF 1
FK65 ABS WIRE BRKT KIT LC76/78/79 1
EL079R SPRING TOY 78/79 SERIES R 2
BP5160010 SHOCK: TOYOTA 76/78/79 REAR 2
VM80010007 KIT: TOYOTA 76/78/79 REAR 1
OMESB85 B/KIT LC 78&79 GREAS 1
OMEGS10 GREASABLE SHACKLE KIT 1
OMEGP7 GREASABLE FIXED END KIT 1
OMEU59B OME U BOLT WASHER & NUT 4
FK76 F/KIT 70 SER SWAY BAR OE MNT 1
FK51 LC70 BPV RELOCATION KIT 50mm 1
FK82 LC70 REAR BRAKE LINE DROP

The Kings sales rep said i shouldn't change the rear springs as it will change the handling. The ARB guys says i have to do the whole package to do it right as the rear shackles alone will not work properly. Not sure who is right or wrong!

Does anyone have any experience with the above shocks on the LC70? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I did the regular 2" OME lift (up in Tokyo.) No BP51 shocks. I think the BP51s are cool but do you really need that for a 2" lift? I think BP51s make sense if you are 100% on dirt all the time and are doing high-speed offroad driving like they do across Australian outback. It's essentially a race shock.

Kings has a good reputation but again, do you really need a remote reservoir shock for a 2" lift if you're not going to be doing hard high-speed offroad driving?

Lifts are challenging because what may be hard to you may be soft to me, etc. I think you will need to change springs/leafs for a lift- shock alone won't lift you.

JFYI, between the 2" lift and the 285/75s, it is a significant lift and my relatives complain about getting in and out of the vehicle.

Did you get the Procomps in Japan? Via Motorage or someone else?

285s are to provide higher gearing when travelling. The after market shocks help a lot on Timor roads. Main roads here are improving, but the secondary and remote roads are terrible. Its pretty much off road driving. The things I wanted to concentrate on were safety and comfort hence all the upgrades related to it. Seats, controls, brakes, suspension, tires. I don't want it to look like an expedition vehicle, hence no bull bars etc.

The Kings kit comes with extended shackles for the rear leafs and 2 inch lift springs for the front, plus the shocks. The rep says that's what i need, but I'm wondering if that's really all I need when i compare it to the BP-51 kit. The BP-51s comes with everything as mentioned above. I may go with the BP-51s just for the service and support I can get from Australia, but I'm still deciding. In the meantime I may stick the regular wheels back on so i'm not rubbing everywhere.

Do you have pictures of your car with the OME lift? What other mods have you done?

Very nice list!

I think Motorage is the best aftermarket parts dealer right now for the GRJ70 Series in Japan. They make stuff that no one else does and their quality is excellent. I think the Australians still have an edge on some things for the 70, but Motorage is great. I have the brake booster stiffener from Motorage too but haven't installed it yet. I also have the same Motorage white shift knob and transfer case knob. Other than the lift and the tires, I've added a Pioneer Navi and rear camera which I had mounted to the top of the door, which works really well. Most rear cameras are mounted lower at the license plate, but that doesn't work on this vehicle because of the rear tire carrier.

You're going to have a great 70 when it arrives. The Bride seats are great. I sat in a set at Masterpiece (another custom 4x4 shop in Kobe): Masterpiece, Land Cruiser 70 Series, GRJ76, Kobe, Japan

Here is the OME install on my 76:

My OME kit did not come with the BP51s but they had all of the required pieces for the proper lift, which is why I liked it. It handles better with a load (or people) than empty, imo. You can mix/match leafs, springs, shocks of course but that's costly and is probably not easy from from you are.

Here are a few recent shots off-road near Mt. Fuji:

Some things I want to do to my 76:

  • Marks's 4WD adapter to adjust speedometer to larger tires
  • Superior Engineering underbody protection
  • better recovery points (ARB or other); Trail makes a rear recovery point
  • ARB twin air compressor
  • dual battery & maintenance system
  • LED lights internal & external
  • getting rid of the current running boards; haven't decided what I want to replace them with
  • more when I think of them...
