I recently replaced my trusty HZJ 78 transformed into an HDJ with a GRJ 78. 4x4 for trips to Africa and Asia.
Do you know if it's a reliable engine?
I read this and it doesn't sound like good news to me

Sounds like you transformed your HZJ78 into a GRJ78.

I assume this was out of necessity as Toyota already made an excellent vehicle for trips into africa and asia when they put a 1HZ engine into the 70 series. If you were looking for more power and still maintain reliability and longevity, you could have put a turbo on the 1HZ, or if it needed to be swapped, then swap in a 1HD-T

My wife's tacoma has that engine (the updated VVT-i) and it is ok... consumes fuel like an alcoholic, uses a bit of oil, but otherwise it seems to carry on, currently at around 180,000miles/300,000kms. Like they said keep some of the common failure components handy (water pump) head gaskets, etc.

If it were me, I would stick with the diesel for long trips and adventures...

hello, I wrote wrong, I had a hzj 78 transformed into hdj with 1hd engine and ct26 turbine, h150f gearbox, because at 57 thousandkm the 1hz engine to which I added the turbo kit broke 2 pistons and r151f gearbox. after the transformation into HD I shot for many km in Africa with my 78
now i bought a new 2022 grj78

Hello,

The 1GR engine is reliable.

If you watch your speed and rpms it is not a thirsty engine. Remember, on a gasoline/petrol 70 Series you are wasting fuel if you exceed 90 km/h.

Provided you stick to the maintenance schedule and avoid messing with the electronics, it will provide years of reliable operation.
