Hey fellers! Would someone mind explaining the difference between moly grease and MP lithium grease? I was under the impression that moly grease is just MP grease with graphite in it? Apparently that is not correct tho as it can not be used for wheel bearings because it does not stand up to heat? Is this correct?

Thanks,
M

Moly refers to molybdenum disulfide, a solid particle that is added to aid lubricity. Lithium refers to the viscofying agent in the grease. Molybdenum disulfide is not graphite but has a similar molecular structure.

Thanksguys. I would still like to hear a reason why moly grease is suggested for part of the application. seems to me that whatever is used for your bearings you would be able to use for the entire job. IMO ofcourse.

There is 40k threads on grease in here. That is what Mr. T says use so most of us go buy that. No need to buck the system.

I am a Aerial Lift Technician ( skilifts) and we use a lot of grease and have many different applications so here are some basics;
pump grease into zerk fittings in above freezing temps ( this may not apply to you but in my biz it does)
keep grease warm for easier pumping ,
rotate your grease , discard old grease if it begins to seperate (leaking oil out of the tubes)
Some greases contain florocarbons , keep off of skin and if you smoke do not get it on a burning cigarette. as if the smoke was bad enough.

lithium based greases ; used on higher rpm applications with roller or ball bearings . used in places that need a thicker grease , use # 3 in high temp apps such as wheel bearings with disc brakes, also works well with bronze / steel bushings as it displaces moisture and fills voids in the bushing bores . thick lithium grease is specified for electric motor applications

Moly based grease; used on low rpm, high pressure steel to steel applications . CV joints, ball joints , leaf spring shackles, low speed couplings , u- joints, slip yokes ,

It may be noted that mixing grease can be detrimental to life of the equipment you are greasing . so once you decide what grease to use , keep on using it .

The boneheads at the Jiffy Lube put lithium grease in all the zerk fittings under your rig . Although the wrong grease is better than no grease. I do all my own greasing to my 60 to assure my own peace of mind .
