In case anyone is also interested in sports cars or racing, this event is held in Gainesville every year at the end of October. It is a total blast to participate in, and my friends and I have built a few cars for it.
Even if you don't have a $2000 build you are welcome to enter into the unbudgeted/exhibition class where you will get a TON of auto-x and drag race seat time. It is well worth the entry for this alone.
There are a ton of really innovative and creative builds to see.
