dspan said:Yeah, you guys get me permission and I will crank out a bunch of those. I just don't have the time to go after the permission. I have about 20 more orders to process and this real job of mine is slowing me down. I am not even slightly exaggerating when I say I worked 20 hours over the weekend and after materials and all the mistakes I made, I made a profit of $17. I said I wasn't trying to make money, but that is 85 cents an hour suckers!!! MUAHAHHAHHAHAAH!!! 52.9 more weekends and I will be able to buy that new air locker I have been looking at!

Definitely not trying to add more work for ya. Just dotring "I"s & crossing "t"s
Hahaa, Geez! Did you even go to bed over the weekend? I know when I sent you that Dakar image at like 1am, you had made one that next morning and a picture up already, I was shocked!
Really, no need to rush (At least on my stuff) I don't care when I get it, can't really apply them in this cold ass weather anyhow.
I'm going to continue thinking up ideas and posting them here for others who might be interested.
dspan said:Hahahaha, I love the help. I actually enjoy the work. In real life, I am a engineering manager, a great job and very rewarding at times, but as a people manager/leader, I don't really produce anything tangible.
This forum has helped my restoration more than I can imagine.
TRUE STORY:
I grew up in the 80's and I had three posters that I worshiped. One was a 1980 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, the second was a Lotus Esprit S4 and the third was a Debbie Gibson poster. I was around 10 years old, and I used to stare at them and think to myself... someday, if I work hard, I am going to have all three of these things.
As I got older, hormones kicked in and I realized that Debbie Gibson was hot, but so were ALL the other girls around me! Debbie was soon long gone.
Those two vehicles though, they never left my thoughts. Fast forward 25 years and cut the scene to my garage. In one spot sits a mint condition 1994 Lotus Esprit S4. The other spot was empty but I knew what was going there.
Then it happened, I saw a guy selling an FJ40 LX on Craigslist, and it was in Massachusetts. WTF? I actually bought it and paid for it without seeing anything more than 4 crappy craigslist photos in low resolution. I knew it was a rotted mess, but it was calling to me. I wanted an LX very badly, and I had been searching want ads for a long time without finding anything affordable. I did not even know about this forum at the time. The truck was delivered and it was a disaster. I remember when I first pushed it into my garage and started going through the truck with a flashlight. Half of the guts were covered in bees nests, and the other half was rotted through. It was clear that this was a very long term and expensive project. I don't get overwhelmed easily, but that evening was a heartbreaker. I wanted a project car, but I went inside with my head hanging low, thinking about what a mistake I had made. I was trying to imagine how the heck I was going to get advice, information and parts for this thing. I had been working on cars my whole life, but things like changing water pumps or alternators, and my claim to fame up to this point was changing a transmission by myself in a 1985 Trans Am, and that took me like 2 weeks. I was 99% certain that I was calling a wrecked the next day to take this tease away for scrap.
After I went inside my house (it was 8pm) I sat down to Google some parts, just to see if I could figure anything out. Right away, I found this site... I stayed up the entire night reading the forums, from about 8:30pm to 8:30am. I was transformed from dejected to incredibly energized. The photos, the help, the PEOPLE. This was unbelievable. I went back down to the truck, exhausted but happy and started looking at it again. What had been a mess of unfamiliar rust holes, jury-rigged wires and leaks, were suddenly much more familiar. Seriously 12 hours of reading this site and I felt like an expert. I was looking at the engine and saying things like, "Yup, the 2F, that is a rugged motor, or H55F, man I am lucky to have that tranny." I was talking to myself out loud, no doubt delirious from not sleeping. I changed the oil with supplies I picked up right before the truck arrived. I stared at that newly installed mustard yellow Purolator oil filter for what felt like an hour, it was an exact match to the paint color, it looked frickin awesome. Game on! Next I started a punchlist and before that second day was over I had already ordered $800 worth of parts from SoR and CCoT. The stuff started coming in and the rest is history. I didn't even make an account on this site for the longest time, it was a bit intimidating at first. Finally, I saw someone selling some Ambulance Doors, jumped in, got the doors and met some great people.
I love my Lotus, but aside from changing a gas vent tube, I am afraid to work on it. This truck is way more fun and building a vehicle is so much more rewarding. I love that I know what every wire does, which bolts are holding what together and that I have a dozen scars on my hands fighting this truck. This truck has eaten more tools than I care to admit. HINT: Don't try to remove a steering damper with a hammer, a huge screwdriver, a tapered file, a three ton truck jack and a chain... Really bad things can happen. Instead read this forum, where you find someone like Draken who documented his experience. Then you will go to the auto parts store and buy a $12 "Pickle Fork". That will prevent you from destroying your screwdriver, a file, a jack and a huge piece of your ceiling.
Wow, that was a long story. Bottom line, if I had not found this forum, I would have junked the truck and maybe kept searching for a fully restored LC. I would have also missed out on the best experience of my life so far. I remember thinking how crazy you guys were and that I could never get that into this world. Last weekend I worked all day Saturday, most of the night and all day Sunday researching and making LandCruiser graphics... My refrigerator and most of my truck is covered in test graphics! Seriously, what the hell did you guys do to me?
Awesome story! Well worth the read, Its a good thing you didn't scarp that 40, it looks great now. Internet vehicle forums really help when you are new to a brand and trying to figure tricks, tips and what to expect and what to look for. Just like when I bought the '92 FJ80, I wanted a '91-'92 because of the 3F-E, No HG issues and has timing gears unlike the 1FZ-FE, Also having the A440F trans was decent. Only 15,000 of the '91-'92s were imported into the U.S, '93-'97 was 1FZ-FE and A442F (aka Bus Transmission)
This forum is what made me keep my FJ80 after I bought it, period. When I first got it, I started to noticed a lot of things that needed to be addressed, things I wasn't used to from owning 80s and 90s Subarus. I first needed to adjust the rocker lash, then I needed tighten wheel bearings, Had to replace Tail and side lights, DS Mirror, Power antenna, changed all fluids, bled brakes, needed new tires and suspension, complete tune up and that fact this thing got 10mpg, I too thought I had made a mistake on buying this for $3,900. I was to the point where I listed it on craigslist for $4,000 - I have a call 10min later from a guy who wanted to look at it, I told him he could come by anytime he wanted, I then called him the next day and told him that I had sold the truck to a buddy and I was sorry for the inconvenience. I just couldn't get over the idea on selling the truck, and I am GLAD I didn't...
So, ih8mud had helped me out a lot too and thank you all for the replies and help!
Two people have asked for custom stickers with names, etc... here is a simple proof but you are welcome to get as creative as you want.
