Bought the truck going on 4 months ago and did what I could myself to try and fix the sputtering issue. Took ot to a shadetree mechanic and he thought it was spark plug wire. He replaced the spark plug and wore and it ran fine but 15 min later sputter came back and there is oil. Now he will see if it is the piston or valve.

Not happy. Anyone have an extra engine hanging around?

pull the efi fuse and pull all the spark plugs and do a compression test you can get the tester and any auto parts store (free loaner)
post up results

Those scopes don't do so well with our double overhead cam engines. You can get the optics down the long plug tube but then have no way to steer it.

There are a lot of pieces of missing data for us to be diagnosing this motor but I would begin by dismissing the notion that a little oil on a plug is cause for a new one. There seems to be a rash of "I need a new motor" going around that has a few of us shaking our heads.

1st question .... who is this "mechanic" and is he really shadetree or does he know 1FZ engines?

Now, when you get some time, give us the background on what it is doing and what you have done to address it.

1. What exactly is it doing?
2. Has it done it since you've had the rig?
3. Is it all the time or does it ever clean up and pull solid? Idle? Part throttle? WOT? Cold? Hot?
4. Any engine codes? Oil or coolant consumption?
5. Have you done a compression test?
6. Do you have any service history with this truck, receipts, etc?

Sputtering like how? Slight miss or running on 5 cylinders? I had the running on 5 cylinders symptom and it ended up being a wire harness issue. Mechanic (er dealer...before I knew about mud) said spark plug tube seals since oil was on the plug.

Hi Rice. It is sputtering under load around 1700 RPM, only in Drive, warm or cold and has done it since i had it. I bought it knowing it did this, the PO was tired of chasing the problem and let it sit for a year. The mechanic was a referral from NextDoor and I am not very confident in his ability to troubleshoot and judging from my conversation yesterday, his honesty.
Re:history, the PO didn't have much but told me he replaced spark plugs, wires and distro. There is a some history of records left in the owner's manual, but all routine oil changes and other consumables like brakes, etc. from owner before the PO.

S4Cruiser to answer your question it is definitely running on 5 cylinders and I researched and printed out the EFI/wiring harnss issue and he just discounted it to be something more mechanical. The mechanic is also pushing a jdm engine replacement or valve machine work.

Until the mechanic is able to ID the issue there shouldn't be any conversation with regards to a motor swap. If this rig is fairly drive-able (no disrespect to the mechanic) I think I would go get my truck back.

Then it will be time for a carefully thought out system of tests that will prevent you from throwing a bunch of parts at it, including a new motor!

We have enough folks on this forum with the wherewithal to get it nailed down.

Well mechanic says the motor is bad, I am doubtful as it drives ok. Any reputable mechanics that know these trucks in the Raleigh area? I really want to enjoy the truck.

I'm confident it is the ecu wiring issue. I even printed the thread and gave it to the 'mechanic'. I'll see what I can do myself.

Rice I'm getting the rig from that guy tomorrow, first thing!

She's back at home. The guy didn't charge me anything but the fuse box cover was broken and it was bone dry in gas. Taking it to Renaissance Auto in Cary tomorrow. Truck also had oil pressure responding to throttle which it never did before either.

Also rough idle now when the hesitation was only under load.

Learned my lesson.

Update...it was wiring harness. Truck runs great. Finally getting to drive after 7 months of ownership, definitely worth the wait.

Can you elaborate? Was it the wiring harness around the EGR valve?
