Here's the last photo taken of the rig before it was damaged.

So I had an accident where I rear ended a truck stopped at a red light after being faked out by them starting to turn right and then abruptly stopping again. My fault of course, but the inside of the rig being fully loaded from my seat all the way back didn't help my braking performance. Thankfully everyone was fine and I made contact with the rubber cone of the bumper otherwise it may have been a lot worse. I had to unbolt one of the little corners of the TJM bumper so that the tire didn't rub on it. Cosmetic damage is mainly the passenger side fender, the bug deflector, and the area under the headlight where the bumper got pushed in to it. I rinsed the car off today but apologies as it's still dirty from my final day trip with it this weekend.

So Cruiser gets inspected by insurance company shop. They quote about $1700 to fix. Get it to my shop and it's declared a total loss because they discover frame damage. Then I get to fight my insurance company who want to give me less than half of what I paid a year prior because they don't really understand a built up rig. For those with heavily modified Cruisers, I suggest you get an agreed value policy or be prepared to fight if your rig gets wrecked. I expected something like this to happen under normal circumstances which is why when I signed up with the insurance company I declared $5600 worth of the major extras that I was allowed to and paid a premium for all of it each month so I would be covered just in case something like this happened. I was told though all of that makes no difference. I pressed and they said that if for example my roof rack got stolen or was damaged they would cover full replacement value, this did not factor in at the end in a total loss scenario. I got $32 added to my payout value for having a "roof rack" even though it's a Gobi Stealth Rack and costs four figures new. Whoopee.

So after giving them comps and documentation to try to counter their insulting offer, they came back to me with the same figure basically saying "too bad." Not even an adjustment. I had to hire an independent evaluator to write up the car and give a fair pre-loss market value. They surprisingly agreed to give me that amended price which was over two times what they had offered initially and closer to what I had paid. So I come today with those words of warning but also wanted to see what you guys think the rig would sell for now as-is. Would be a shame to see this go to auction or a junkyard, so I'm thinking I have to retain the car and sell it independently so that I can get closer to breaking even and an enthusiast can have a shot at it. I figure this would make a great project car, off road rig, or even donor car for another project. Right now I'm just fact finding and will likely clean the car up and put a proper classified ad up in due time, but wanted to hear what you guys thought and also maybe get some stories from other members who have had issues with insurance and built up rigs getting wrecked.

reupholstered driver's seat

Since I bought it I had a front axle replaced (OEM), did both front wheel bearings, replaced all four front ball joints, replaced front sway bar bushings, put in new steering rack bushings (I don't think it was enough so may need a new steering rack), replaced the sunroof panel, had an oil and filter change with Mobil 1, and got it aligned.

It can still get out and have fun though and is much more technically capable than I am as a driver!

What kind of frame damage?? Did you shear the mounting location of the bumper?
Not sure honestly. I'm no expert in these things. That was my first thought though too. Was the weak link basically where the bumper was mounted? The bumper itself seems totally fine besides needing a new screw for the little rubber bumper piece. I'm not sure how cars with these bumpers usually look after accidents, but I can say the bumper is still on tight and doesn't rattle, make noise, or move around at all. Damn good thing if I was to hit it that it was at the angle it was with the rubber cone taking the majority of the impact.

Have you gotten a second opinion on the frame damage yet? I'd fix it man. Your not going to get what you paid for it and all the accessories, so why not repair it back to its glory? How fast were you going when the impact happened? I really doubt there was much if any frame damage.. I've seen worse accidents without bending the frame.

If they aren't going to pay you for the aftermarket stuff I would be taking it off the vehicle. I have done this with another car I had before. They were not interested in paying me for the aftermarket parts so they got a car that was missing a lot of pieces. There are a lot of things an insurance company isn't going to pay you for on your list though (be it wear and tear items or just stuff you wanted like tint, LEDs, or floor mats).

Total bummer man. It was a good looking rig.

I think I would investigate the "frame damage" further.

Tell them you will buy the truck back from them for $200, take the money they give you, buy a hard urethane skateboard wheel, borrow a hammer, fix it and drive/re-crash as you please, fix it, with a salvage title and only liability insurance.

Maybe is just me but I'm used to "For Racing ONLY Vehicles/parts/engines" that you buy with the understanding they have absolutely no coverage of any kind, and many of them can not be even be insured..

Three spoons of Bondo, one spray can of primer, one can of "toyota white" paint and a "Sand bag" I borrow from a friend and it looks much better as long as you don't touch it you can not really see the damage (on the fender, I'm getting a free bumper)

And remember Insurance companies are there to play the odds and MAKE Money, not to help you out, regardless of whatever Flo/cho, Foo..?? her name is..

I was planning on selling before this happened anyway, so now I'll just be selling it with a little more "character" than when I bought it and at a discount. I don't really want to take on the project if I'm honest, so my loss is someone else's gain.

I find it hard to believe that you'd have frame damage.

Would they let you buy it back? Or give you $$$ and you can keep it to swap over parts to a new truck? Or part it out to make your $$$ back?

Not a Bumper expert by any extend, but I have the feeling more than a of few of them are so very rigid, they don't dissipate the energy of the impact into Collapse/crumple/deflection (they are not even dissociated axially and transmit the forces from one side of the vehicle to the other) and the main frame of the vehicle end up taking one from the team..

"Esto de "Quien es mas MACHO" is a dangerous game and somebody ALWAYS end up paying for it..

Sacrificial parts are actually a really good thing..

First and foremost. Sorry this happened.

As already stated above:

How fast were you and/or the other party going?

Have you had a second/third opinion on the frame damage?

"Character" is exactly what your vehicle needed. It looks like you actually wheel your vehicle. I think it looks bad ass. If you're trippin on that front panel I would have some shop straighten it out as much as possible and move on with your well equipped truck.

Ditto on this. I had a similar incident in 2009 with TJM Classique Bumper with far more damage...hood crumple, broken headlights, grill and air filter assembly. No bent frame. Repair quote was well over 4k. I patched it back together for half the $$ with a cash for clunker hood, headlights and grill. Then @bluecruiser hooked me up with his old ARB Combo and she has been going strong ever since.

The TJM bumper mount was not as robust as the ARB. IIRC, the bumper mount is just two flat plates with slots to allow for adjustments. You should be able to salvage that bumper using the adjustment slots, then either fix the fender or replace it with a junkyard one (try to find the same color).

Why would they force a salvage title if you could drive it away?...I had to be towed home and did not have to make any changes to the title.

Get a second opinion for the frame damage, and make them point it out to you where is the exact damage. I am no expert but have seen worse hit that do not cause frame damage. Granted it was on tundra, but would think that LC frame is stronger/better built.

Get the photos the body shop took of the frame damage. See what your buy-back offer is after they get salvage value. You may have significant cash gain if the final offer was decent vs what they'll get quoted on salvage for that year/miles.

Went through similar deal, but got rear-ended and pushed into car in front. Minor frame damage at rear got it totaled, but frame was fixed for less than $1000, if I remember correctly. We also pulled out the TJM bumper and reused it.

Total loss rules vary by state, i.e., state definition of total loss is different than insurance company. In Texas, it was totaled by company, but I kept non-salvage title and never dropped current coverage as it wasn't totaled by state definition.

Lastly, everyone should check their policy. I found, after the fact, that USAA offers an endorsement to pay 20% over market if car is totaled and have seen similar with other carriers. Not widely advertised and unless you have a policy review I doubt your agent will mention it.

Sounds like OP wants to sell anyways. May make a couple bucks but selling a 100 with a salvage title (if it gets to that), isn't that easy or appealing for many potential buyers. Factor in time, as well, for pulling the parts, etc. and it may best best just to haggle until they total it for what the OP is looking for.

Sorry to hear about your accident. My insurance company let me add extra coverage to mods for $150 a year. They had me send them a detailed list of the cost of each mod. My guy said they will depreciate some but I would be a lot happier if something happens and it gets totaled.

I think you have the same rear bumper I have, TJM?
