Ok...Jack asked a question about these new tires I'm running so I thought I'd create a thread just for the new Goodyear MT/R Kevlar Tires.

I had four Goodyear MT/R Kevlar tires installed a few weeks ago after getting frustrated over the relatively short lifespan/treadlife of the Toyo Open Country AT tires I've been running for the past 13-months or so.

So far:

They are about 50% quieter than the original MTR.
They performed great on the trails recently travelled apart of the Coyote Flats trip.
They corner, on pavement, much better than the original MTR but not as good as the Toyo OC AT's (that's to be expected).
Max weight added to balance: 4.75 oz or less.
Oddly I get more noise out of them when braking than when just travelling down the road/highway.

I hope to eventually report better tread life!

And comparing total weight between the two tires: Toyo Open Country AT and the new Goodyear MT/R Kevlar in 285R75 18" the Goodyear's are about 4-pounds lighter! The MT/R Kevlar in the above size weigh 66lbs. The Toyo OC AT in the same size weighs 70lbs. These weights are approximate as they were derived by subtracting the wheel weight, in this case 29lbs, from the total weight of the wheel/tire/balancing weights/stem.

Good initial report. Looking forward to your long term results and hopefully much longer wear than the Toyo ATs.

Not that you were unhappy with the Toyo AT's traction, but hopefully the new Kevlar MT/Rs are better in the sloppy stuff you seem to find yourself in occasionally.

Toyo MT's?

What's the scuttlebutt on the wear factor for the Toyo MT's, anyone know?

i've got a set on now but they don't have many miles on them yet.

Also Dan, which way did you go up to coyote? the normal way, or the "interesting" way?

:-)

I've gotta start reading this forum. If I'd known you guys were going up there I would have joined you. I haven't been to CF for a couple years now.

Dana,
You should, based upon others that are running the Toyo MT's, should get at least 30K out of them and probably more. Strange one can get almost twice the mileage out of an MT compared to the same manufacturer's AT.

We went up and back via the north road. We had a couple stock rigs with us and was told to avoid the Big Pine/Sugarloaf trail as it gets pretty rough/tough in sections. Supposedly, per a couple guys in our group that spoke to a Jeeper, a couple or more local 4x4 groups are working on trail improvements for that section.

But it was super neat driving to Green Lake!

The last time I was at CF was with you several years ago. Still beautiful as ever.

You should come up and do the Sweetwater Range with us!

Yeah, CF is a beautiful spot. Last time I was there, we did a 'pre-run' of the Wheeler Ridge trail, near Rock Creek Canyon. That was a blast. I've been wanting to get up the fun way to CF and that Wheeler trail again.

What are the details on the Sweetwater Range? Where, when, how long, etc.

And where is Green Lake???

thanks

Dana

Green Lake is in the SW portion of this map. It, AFAIK, is the most western currently accessible area of CF. It lies just to the east of South Lake which is on Hwy 168. Many moons ago, apparently from several different maps, you could 4x4 into this area and on to Coyote Ridge from the west along Hwy 168; but that's long been closed for access.

There is a neat foot/hiking trail that leads from Hwy 168, just south of Parchers Camp, up to Green Lake and then on to the Baker Creek drainage.

The Sweetwater Mountains lie east of Walker and north of Bridgeport. They are a real gem. Could easily spend a week covering all the trails in this range; loads of old mining trails and even a stand of Bristlecone Pines! Drive right up to 11,663' atop Mt. Patterson. Better hurry because the environazis are working zealously to rope them off.

The first few pics of the pics I recently posted are from the SWR.

Here are a few pics from our recent trip to the Sweetwater Mountains.

Looks really nice, Dan.

When are you guys planning a trip up there?

I did a couple of trails a bit south and west of Bridgeport last time I was up there. Very nice, very scenic. I wanna go back!

Another area I'd like to revisit, although it's a bit of a drive for me, is the Desatoya's. Andy P did a trip out there about 3 years ago, we had a blast.

No plans. But one thing I remember from 3-years ago next month were all the rifle shots that rang out from the hunting camps. Even though I'm a hunter I don't want to be exploring/camping/hiking during deer season.

If you liked the Desatoya's you would LOVE the Monitor and Hot Creek ranges. Locrwln and I spent a week in just these two ranges in June. Great stuff.

South of Bridgeport: So you probably went up Aurora Canyon or Masonic to Bodie?

Based on wear so far I would say we will get 30K+ easily.
