I'm a newbie LC owner - just went from driving a 4runner for 11 years to 1996 LC.
The LC has 108 K on it and I'm preparing for a Birf repack when the weather gets warmer. I have two questions:
1) Whats a good price for a 54 mm socket, I've located one for about $45, is that a good deal.

2) I have already read alot of the descript.'s of the Birf repacts, I need to clarify - are people putting a thin layer of grease on the flanges where the gaskets go to help seal the unit or should the mating surfaces be clean and grease free ?

FInd a Snap On truck, get it from him, $16 for a Blue Point, VERY nice 54mm socket.

Slee sells it as well.

OTC has a nice one, not sure price(I want to say $22), most good parts stores can get these

There are cheap sockets out there and good sockets. I suggest one of each. The Sears Craftsman 2 1/8" (3/4) drive is an excellent socket, and works in this application like it was built for it. The hub socket from SOR is cheap, feels cheap, but works well, and you can throw it in your take-along tool box. You should be able to get both plus the 3/4 to 1/2 adapter for less than $45.

If you use the SEARCH button, you would find this link I have posted before, but since you apparently could not find the SEARCH button I will repost it just for you.

It's the OTC, 1/2" drive 54mm from www.tooldesk.com

Do not get the 3/4" drive recommended above and on the 80's list from Sears. You will quickly learn the hard way that you won't have the 1/2"-3/4" adapter you thought you had when you need it. Stick with the 1/2" for that reason alone.

I got mine on sale when they were like $7 each or something like that.

They also sell some other good crap too.

Zach -

Welcome to the forum.

The $45 part you mentioned is way overkill. The 1/2" drive socket Junk refers to is an OTC #6612. It should set you back in the neighborhood of $15 or so. I was able to get one through Napa, but just about any good tool supplier can get them. The Snap-On Blue-Point that Landpimp recommends is also an excellent choice.

Cheers, R -

Got mine from cdan along with all my other stuff...was $24 I believe. Could withstand a nuclear explosion I'm sure.
Remember that the 8 bolts that hold felt seal are 43 in./lbs. not ft./lbs. :)

I got my OTC also from a site like the one Junk listed for under $10 shipped also. It doesn't need to be bombproof, just sturdy.

Do not I repeat Do NOT get the sor one. unless you plan on just abusing it. not that well built and not worth the 15 bucks I paid for it.

Thanks for the feedback !

Thanks to all who responded !

Got my 54mm OTC at thetoolwarehouse.net for under $8 back in '01.

OTC 6612 is $8.18 at Tool Warehouse.

Not the best, but work just fine.

WTF? I was all jazzed to find it for $8.18 and then the tak on 7 bucks for shipping and 10 for handling. What a rip!

IIRC, I ordered $100 of tools on the first order and got free shipping/handling.
