Hey everybody,

I had been looking at Land Cruisers recently and found one on Autotrader that really caught my interest. So I called the number in the ad but is was no good, then I tried the email and didn’t get a response. Also I asked a favor of “cruisermaine” who had volunteered his carfax access, and had him run the VIN in the ad, which turned out to be an invalid VIN. So with all of this I figured is was either a major mistake or a scam so I bought another cruiser …

Well they finally answered my original email yesterday, here it is below:

Hi,
I wish to provide you a brief history about my car:
I'm the second owner, the car were bought in 2002. It has an automatic transmission, also don't worry about filters (gas, air or oil), brakes or sparks, they were changed at the last revision.
Tires were all replaced with new Michelins roughly 1 year ago. Current mileage is 64617.
If you want to see more pictures check this link:

The car is in great condition, it has never been through any type of accident. Exterior is very clean. Clean interior that is in good shape. It was used 90% on highways. All papers required for registration, title, manuals, invoices of all maintenance done on the car since I purchased it and keys are in the glove for the new owner. Technical revisions were performed at each 7000 miles. The car was priced for a quick sale because I'm relocating and no longer in need of this one.
I will pay the transportation and you will have to pay the money transfer fees. The car is into auto cargo company warehouse, and will be sent from Irving, Texas on my expense. Delivery time will be 7-10 days or maybe less, that depend of your location. Also, I have to tell you that I want the proof that you have all the money available for this deal, because of that I want you to make a deposit of $1500. The balance must be paid within 3 days after you get the car.
Tell me if is ok for you in order to proceed with this sale.

I do appreciate your interest and look forward to doing business with you,
Dalim <Dalimatonom@aol.com>

It was long enough ago and I had looked at enough rigs that I could remember more about it besides it was a REALLY good deal. Also on the website he gave a VIN which I know is at least a valid number but I didn’t feel like bothering “cruisermaine” again to have run since I didn’t have the funding. Hesitantly… I sent the reply below and asked some questions. (I was hesitant because of the above issues I had originally)

Hi Dalim,
Thank you for the information and link with regards to your Land Cruiser. If you don't mind I have a couple of questions for you.
1. What should I expect for the money tranfer fees, and is shipping available to Alaska.
2. What is your current asking price again.
Thanks for your time.

This is the response I got today,

<EDIT Based on messages below this IS A SCAM>

I think that $17000 will be the right price since I've to sell it till 20 this month. Money transfer fees ~ $100.
The car were delivered to the auto cargo company and it is ready to be ship, it has keys, title, invoices and manuals. Now, I want to tell you how transaction works, I will send you the tracking number which confirm shipment, and you send me the advance. The balance must be paid within 3 days after you get the car. I think, that 3 days are enough to inspect the car and verify the documents.
That's simple, fast and secure. If you agree, please send shipping address and name, so that I would calculate shipping and insurance.

Thank you,
Dalim <Dalimatonom@aol.com>

SEE BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS AS TO WHY AND HOW THIS IS A SCAM.

PS DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY CONNECTIONS WITH AOL SO I COULD NAIL THIS GUY FOR SCAMMING?

That was my first thought too, but I figured that there were enough resources on this board to flush it out if that was the case.

Also the scams I am familiar with use yahoo, Google, or hotmail type accounts not AOL, as it's quite a bit harder to have an anonymous AOL account than the others.

Not to say it couldn’t be a scam but I think it should be looked into a little more, that’s all.

So how did you snif it out??? I still feel like I am missing out on a great deal.
If this is a scam is there some way to catch this guy?

I think I've seen these pictures - background warehouse and all - on ebay a couple of weeks ago. I didn't look at it in detail because I didn't like the look of the lower panels.

It's tempting to get the number or the storage facility and verify that the LC exists and is located at a reputable place of business, but probably a scam.

Send an e-mail saying you have a good friend in the Dallas-Irving area that is going to go by the auto shipper's warehouse and inspect it for you so you need the name and address. The current NADA published values for a 2001 LC are:
Retail: $34,500
Trade-in: $30,175
Loan: $27,275
Based on these values, its got to be a scam.

Chances are he is not even in the US. I notifed cars.com and msn, and received no responses.....

Do you really think you should send money to someone without even seeing a car? And trust them that they are sending you one?

Click Search on your browser. Type in internet car scam. Then you will see what this is///and remember what your grandma told you bout if something is too good to be true...

This is a scam. I listed a car on Autotrader once, and had the reverse happen- I want to buy it, will wire money, need your bank account number, etc.

A tall tree and short rope would be adequate for these type folks.

Well I just paid $19.4k for a 2000, so it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility but I agree the paying before the sale is a little worrisome…

The thing is… How do you buy a car long distance without putting some money up front? I ended up going with a dealer in an area I could have a friend check out the car and the business and make sure it was legit.

The idea to say somebody is in Dallas area and wants to take a look at it is great; I think I will do it. Is there anybody in the Dallas area that would like to do this?

It is a scam, tell him you will buy it if you can get a picture of him holding the title with a current texas newspaper next to the VIN, and a picture of it parked next to a Mc Donalds restaurant. Neither would be hard to do.... except he just harvested a pic and VIN off the web and is located in Europe somewhere. This is such a common scam, don't waste your time.

Dont Buy It!!!!!

Is this the same cruiser?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&tc=photo&item=4525551048&category=6443

Does the Texas flag in the background look familiar?

Let me guess...

Is this warehouse in Houston? Are you dealing with a guy named Ed?

I looked at this cruiser last week and it was simply awful looking. It looked like it had been driven behind a gravel truck as there were no less than 15 chips in the paint on the hood and front of the truck. The primer was showing.

Both driver and passenger had huge chunks taken out of the cladding. Every quarter panel was severely dinged. I am very familiar with LC 100 series and this was the worst one I have ever seen. Absolutely awful. The pictures don’t show it, but believe me, it is a bad truck.

I had to drive 2 and a half hours to view the LC. After Ed represented to me that the truck was “cherry”, I decided to make the drive. After I viewed the car, I told Ed that the Cruiser was terrible and he then had the gall to kick me off his lot!!! Unbelievable! I couldn’t believe it.
The fact that Ed kicked me off his lot after he had represented to me that truck was cherry (and it clearly isn’t) should tell you everything you need to know.

This guy is bad news!

DO NOT BUY THIS TRUCK!!!

There is a nice ending to this story though. After my terrible experience at Texas Direct Auto I attempted to salvage my day in Houston before traveling back home. I called every Toyota dealership and found a white 2000 with 53K. I paid 27500. A hellevua deal if you ask me. I could not be happier. A major silver lining.

But it looked so beautiful in the pictures!!!

When I was searching for a 100 series I kept finding these scams on ebay. They would come up every week or two. I got tired of notifying ebay (they should make it easier to send them fraud notices). One of them stated they had to move to Italy and they took their cruiser with them only to find they could not register it there. They said they woulod pay to ship it back to the states LOL. They told me the transaction would be safe because it would utilize some 3rd party group. When I checked that group they are legitimate but their own site says they are NOT an escrow service. Also, when I told them I had an associate in Italy who would look at the truck for me I never heardfrom them again. Their photos usually have the same background and they usually list the location as both New York and London or something like that.

Run Away

Same here, except they wanted to use Western Union, were in Italy, and the ad was placed in Atlanta......

Beside the fact that its a scam, words like this "Technical revisions" are a tip the seller is not from the US.

Just so everybody is clear I AM NOT BUYING THIS LAND CRUISER! I bought another one, but wanted to bring this one to everybodies atention (either it's a really good deal or a scam and either way it can't hurt for people to see it).

<EDIT:>

OK I should have looked at the Ebay aucion first, this is the exact same vehical (same VIN) so that definitely makes it a scam. Now is there any way to get this guy? Since it's no longer listed on Autotrader, my guess is that the best thing to do would be report it to AOL?????

To clarify since it was still unclear... The one on ebay isn't the scam, though "Domingo" would have things to say otherwise since it is aperantly in WAY worse shape than described. I guess unless they guy actually paid for his AOL membership and email name there really isn't any way to nail this guy, I would just hate know that there was somethng I could have done to stop sombody else from being scammed.
